The individual selected for this position will:

  • Review and assist in the preparation of analytic reports, working papers, articles in peer reviewed journals, or presentations at conferences and other professional meetings.
  • Respond to questions from and/or provide assistance to the internal/external data user community.
  • Coordinate a program of research for subject matter experts using household and economic surveydata.
  • Manage multiple projects.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

A. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements will be granted for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing

NOTE: As indicated in A above credit toward meeting statistical course requirements will be granted for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing. Additionally, to receive credit for coursework that is not catalogued on the transcript as Statistics or contain 'statistics' in the course title, applicants must attach an official course description for the course that clarifies that the course has statistical content, or written documentation (documentation must be on official school letterhead) from a professor or a school official verifying that the content of a course has either met the 50% statistics course requirements or was a statistical course if the course name in your transcript is not entitled as statistics.

If you do not submit sufficient academic documentation necessary to demonstrate that you meet the eligibility and minimum qualification requirements described in this announcement, your application will be deemed incomplete and you will be ineligible for further consideration for this vacancy.

B. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

Education Documentation: All applicants, to include Census employees, must submit a copy of your official transcripts or a list of courses showing title, number of credits, grade and date of completion. Additionally, to receive credit for coursework that is not catalogued on the transcript as Statistics or contain 'statistics' in the course title, applicants must attach an official course description for the course that clarifies that the course has statistical content, or written documentation (documentation must be on official school letterhead) from a professor or a school official verifying that the content of a course has either met the 50% statistics course requirements or was a statistical course if the course name in your transcript is not entitled as statistics.

EXPERIENCE: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the grade 11 level. Specialized experience is work experience developing solutions to difficult statistical or analytical problems that did not have readily available precedents, establishing analytical methodology, designing sampling and estimation procedures for surveys, documenting work results and findings, and preparing technical reports. Your assignments included responsibility for one or more of the following: 1) independently leading a team to plan a statistical survey or study, 2) developing survey and data collection specifications, 3) establishing time schedules for various phases of survey operations, 4) coordinating the accomplishment and management of the various phases of the study or survey, and 5) making presentations and planning the analysis of the socioeconomic or demographic data developed by the survey or study.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

  • Skill reviewing and/or writing presentations, working papers and/or publications presenting social science, economic, or demographic analysis to a variety of audiences.
  • Knowledge of tools used in quantitative social science research on a variety of social science topics.
  • Knowledge of theories related to statistical research.
  • Ability to analyze large scale economic or household survey data to address research questions related to survey goals.
