75% or less - Entry level inspectors will spend approximately 21 weeks at the National Mine Academy in Beckley, WV for training during their first 2 years of service. All Inspectors travel to mine sites on a regular basis. Frequent overnight travel may be required for most Inspectors
MSHA Inspector job responsibilities include conducting on-site inspections or investigations of underground and surface mines in order to: Identify potential hazardous conditions to the safety and health of workers; Ensure proper mining equipment maintenance and use; Evaluate mining practices for compliance with safety and health laws and regulations; Issue citations when violations and/or hazards are identified; Determine how accidents and disasters are caused and provide recommendations to prevent future occurrences; Assist in the rescue and recovery efforts after fires or explosions; Investigate reported hazardous condition complaints; and Discuss inspection/investigation findings and provide technical advice and assistance to mine management and personnel.

Applicant must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS 5, in the Federal Service. Specialized experience includes, but is not limited to on-site safety or health inspection, analysis, monitoring, or evaluation work in safety or health in mining or closely related industries, such as building construction, excavation and heavy industrial plant settings with close supervision. Examples of creditable experience in related to non-mining work include work that provided the applicant with knowledge of ground control at building sites, safe worksite practices, or environmental conditions that affect the health of workers at foundries, mills or other inherently dangerous industrial settings. For example, performance of safety and health inspection work at a steel mill would qualify at this grade level, but agricultural inspection work would not.

Knowledge of transportation of materials and workers, ventilations in closed spaces, ground control, roof control (for underground positions), handling and storage of hazardous materials, worksite safety practices, worksite environmental conditions that affect the health of workers or accident prevention. Examples of creditable experience include: applying analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to enhance procedures and approaches to identify and resolve safety issues. Applies new methods to mining problems and safety programs with little to no supervision.
