GS-5: Receives formal and on-the-job instruction and training learn about the functions and operations of the organization and to provide practical application of basic industrial hygiene concepts, principles and techniques. Assists higher grade industrial hygienists in the conduct of inspections or performance of related projects. Attends opening and closing conferences. Performs tasks such as maintaining, calibrating and operating field and laboratory instruments and equipment; collecting samples during investigations; and performing selected laboratory analyses of materials, computational analysis or test results, or preparing samples for shipment to laboratory.
GS-7: (1) Receives developmental assignments, including formal and on-the-job training in general and specific health matters. Identifies and evaluates conditions in the workplace which may adversely affect the health of employees. (2) Performs portions of industrial hygiene inspections with higher graded industrial hygienists, or independently conducts inspections of establishments of limited size and complexity. (3) Attends and/or conducts opening and closing conferences. (4) Reviews company's record keeping, interviews employees, takes photographs and collects environmental samples using a variety of sampling equipment. (5) Drafts reports or portions of reports on industrial hygiene investigations. (6) Performs field calibration of equipment.
GS-9: (1) Conducts industrial hygiene inspections of businesses to identify and evaluate conditions and detect violations of published standards. (2) Independently conducts inspections of establishments of limited size and complexity, or a segment of a more complex and difficult inspection under a higher graded industrial hygienist. (3) Prior to inspections, becomes familiar with work operations, materials and other relevant facts about the workplace. (4) Conducts opening conferences. Conducts or participates in closing conferences. (5) Reviews occupational safety and health records, conducts walk-through inspections, observes work operations, and collects environmental samples using a variety of sampling equipment. Sends samples to laboratory for analysis. (6) Prepares reports or portions of reports, citing violations and recommending penalties. (7) Works with higher graded employees to provide technical assistance to employers and participate in public information activities.

GS-5: Applicants who meet the basic requirement as described under Qualifications are fully qualified for the GS-5 grade level. For GS-7: 1 year of graduate level education, or Superior Academic Achievement as the undergraduate level (A) upper third of graduating class: (B) 3.0 GPA for all course work during the last 2 years: (C) 3.5 GPA in required courses completed in major field during the final 2 years; or (D) Membership in a national scholastic honor society. For GS-9: 2 years or progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
Qualifications
All applicants must meet eligiblity requirement, basic requirement and specialized experience to be considered for the position. Qualification Requirements: Basic Requirments: 1)Degree: industrial hygiene; or branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. Course in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. or 2)Combination of education and experience-at least 12 semester hours of course work chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours as specified in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Evaluation of Education: All science or engineering courses offered in fulfillment of the above requirements must be acceptable for credit toward the completion of a standard 4-year professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in science or engineering at an accredited college or university. Evaluation of Experience: Qualifying experience may have been obtained in field, laboratory, engineering or other environment if the work provided a means of obtaining a professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of industrial hygiene and closely related sciences such as physics and engineering controls. Such work must have involved experience in all of the following areas: the acquisition of quantitative and qualitative data, and the measurement of exposures of a variety of chemical, physical, and biological stresses; the analysis of the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on the health and well-being of workers; and the selection and recommendation of appropriate controls, including management, medical, engineering, education or training, and personal protective equipment. GS-5: Applicants will be qualified if they meet the basic requirement. GS-7 & 9: Must meet basic requirements, eligibilty requirement and education or specialized experience. GS-7: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level, in the federal government. Gs-9: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level, in the federal government. Specialized experience: experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of qualifying experience are listed above under evaluation of experience. Regardless of Grade applicants must meet basic requirement.
Education
To be eligible for appointment, you must meet requirement a or b:
a. Completed all requirements for an associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational, or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution within the previous two years; or
b. Was released or discharged from active duty within the previous two years, where the applicant is a veteran who, due to a military service obligation, was precluded from applying for a recent graduate position during any portion of the two-year eligibility period following completion of his/her degree or certificate requirements, provided that not more than six years have transpired since the applicant completed the requirements for a degree or certificate
