Duties

Help
  • Manages the computer hardware, and the development and application of software for web design, to be in alignment with the machine learning and database management for agricultural research aspects.
  • Develops and manages well-functioning databases and applications.
  • Provides technical assistance on research plans, experimental design, sampling procedures, statistical analysis procedures, and web application tools.
  • Develops and conducts training in web programming applied to agricultural research programs by means of in-service training.
  • Modifies and develops new desktop and mobile applications where current methodologies are not adequate or effective.
  • Conducts analyses on interim and final data sets to provide direction and continuity in research projects.
  • Builds features and applications with a mobile responsive design and builds front-end of applications through appealing visual design.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:

0401 Series:

A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE BASIC REQUIREMENT, AS STATED ABOVE, ALL APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

For the GS-9:

Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience providing support in computational biology or data science; and assisting with developing or managing websites, databases or web-based applications for research projects.

OR

Education: Successful completion of 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. Related degrees may include Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, or Computational Biology

OR

A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as describe above.

For the GS-11:

Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience providing support in computational biology or data science; assisting with developing or managing databases, websites or web-based applications for research projects; assisting with developing or conducting trainings; and adapting or modifying existing or developing new methodology, guidelines and policies.

OR

Education: Successful completion of 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Related degrees may include Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, or Computational Biology.

OR

A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as describe above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of Agriculture. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.
