Help

Duties:  The Animal Health Technician position is located in the Department of veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration, Mid-Atlantic Care Network at the McGuire Center in Richmond, VA.  Related duties are, but not limited to the following:

  • Performs a wide variety of conventional and non-conventional veterinary techniques to provide care to a variety of species including but not limited to venipuncture via a variety of routes, oral gavage, IV administration of fluids an d post-operative incision repair.
  • Performs complex surgical procedures (novel and routine) and provide veterinary assistance when needed during research procedures.
  • Conducts daily health checks, provide medications, treatments and post-surgical care.
  • Design and implement a comprehensive post approval monitoring program of all protocols approved by the IACUC to ensure compliance.
  • Monitors all protocols and  provide a report with any deficiencies and recommended action plans.
  • Conducts sampling from rodent colonies, submit the samples and interpret the results.
  • Design and implement an action plan to eradicate disease, if necessary.
  • Evaluates researchers and determine if training is needed ad provides training for a variety of procedures such as venipuncture, gavage, weight management and euthanasia.
  • Monitors the day to day operations of the VMU and ensure husbandry procedures are being maintained to a high standard.

Schedule:  Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM.

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: In order to meet time-in-grade for this position, applicants must have held the GS-8 grade or higher for one year. 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  The work requires some physical exertion.  Most activity includes, but not limited to, walking, standing for, bending, climbing of stools//ladders for extended periods and carrying items of less than 50 lbs.

This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (knowledge, skill, ability or other worker characteristic basic to -and essential for- satisfactory performance of the job).  Selective Placement factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position.  Applicants who do not meet the Selective Placement Factor are in eligible for further consideration.

The Selective Placement Factor for this position is:  "Must have a Veterinary Technician Certification and experience in an animal research environment."

GS-9 Specialized Experience:  Applicant must possess one year of specialized experience that equip them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typicallu in or related to work th work of this position.  To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-8 grade level in the Federal Service.  Qualifying specialized experience

includes: work as a laborer, manager, or owner of a livestock ranch or farm involving direct work with livestock; with livestock in a feed lot; as  a livestock market inspector; as an animal in spector; as an assistant to a veterinarian who works with livestock; evaluate researchers and determineif training is needed; provide training for  variety of procedures such as venipuncture, gavage, weight management, euthanasia; conduct daily health checks; provide medications, treatments and post-surgical care; perform complex surgical procedures (novel and routine) and provide veterinary assistance when needed during research procedures; perform a wide variety of conventional and non-conventional veterinary techniques to provide care to a variety of species including but not limited to venipuncture via a variety of routes, oral gavage, IV administration of fluids and post-operative incision repair.

OR

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE  (Transcript Required):  Successful completion of two years of graduate level education that is directly related to the work of the position to be filled.  This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.  One year of full time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full time study.  If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement.  Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with it relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.

OR

COMBING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required):  Combination of successfully completed graduate education may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

Your resume should reflect the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's):

Ability to handle animal research models and use conventional and non conventional techniques to provide care.

Knowledge of health monitoring programs within the animal facility to control and eradicate disease.

Ability to be an educational resource to researchers and technicians by providing technical assistance and training for complex procedures.

Knowledge of day to day operations in the VMU including animal husbandry requirements for a variety species.
