Summary

This position is located in the Consolidated Laundry at the St. Albans VA Medical Center, NY, and performs a wide variety of laundry and linen distribution work to include: receiving, storing, distributing, and maintaining stock levels of government linens and garments. The incumbent is responsible to provide linen and uniforms to the Brooklyn VA Medical Center, St. Albans VAMC, Bronx VAMC, Manhattan and Northport VA Medical Centers.

Help

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Operates powered equipment such as industrial washers and dryers.
  • Operates flatwork spreader/feeder, ironer, folder, etc.
  • Operates a lift station and rail sling system.
  • Performs routine care and maintenance on laundry equipment.
  • Cleans and sanitize work area.
  • Inspects linens for damage, stained items, etc.
  • Keeps equipment, cords, hoses, etc., clean and properly stored when not in use.
  • Assists with cleaning the plant at the end of the shift.
  • Utilizes proper cleaning solutions and/or chemicals to successfully remove stains from a
    variety of textiles.
  • Cleans soiled linen from ward areas or clinics using the proper collection methods for
    handling possibly contaminated items.
  • Performs routine maintenance on cleaning equipment such as tightening nuts and bolts and/or
    greasing/oiling fittings and wheels.
  • Maintains production counts and inventory records of all supplies.
  • Reads and follows posted care and maintenance instructions through signs and pictures.
  • Follows simple written instructions for completing non-routine laundry related tasks.
  • Follows oral directions to perform simple tasks which may require several steps to complete.
  • Follows established safety and infection control procedures.
  • Applies appropriate cleaning solutions to various types of textiles.
  • Keeps a stock of cleaning materials and equipment needed to perform work assignments.
  • Follows sanitation and infection control procedures to prevent the spread of bacteria.
  • Ensures use of the appropriate wash formula based on item type being processed.
  • Utilizes proper lifting techniques when lifting objects especially those that may be bulky and/
    or awkward.
  • Pushes, pulls, lifts, carries, or moves laundry around for several hours or more at a time.
  • Stands/walks for several hours or more while performing laundry duties.
  • Adheres to safety policies and procedures when performing manual work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/09/2026.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: This position ranges from light to heavy manual effort and lifting with occasional long periods of walking, standing, bending, and repetitively lifting up to 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, coordination, and range of motion to maneuver wheeled linen carts
Working Conditions: All work is done indoor. Subject to extreme heat temperatures and hazardous work on high powered moving machines.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
