As an Intern, your major duties may include:

  • Conducting legal research as required related to physical accessibility of buildings and facilities, accessibility of information and communication technology (ICT), ethics, and privacy using Lexis and other online resources.
  • Evaluate legal documents for substantive legal sufficiency, including assessing the relevance and application of cited authorities and identifying legal issues or gaps.
  • Independently draft legal memoranda and written analyses addressing moderately complex legal issues, including interpretation and application of statutes, regulations, and case law.
  • Analyze and synthesize public comments and stakeholder input on rulemaking, identifying legal issues, trends, and implications for agency policy. Review and analyze FOIA requests and responsive records, applies applicable exemptions, and develops legally supportable recommendations regarding disclosure determinations. Conduct legal and factual analysis in support of investigations under the ABA, drafts correspondence, evaluates compliance issues, and recommends potential courses of action.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Internship Eligibility:
A. Must be a current student in an accredited law school pursuing a qualifying degree.
B. All applicants are REQUIRED to submit all undergraduate and graduate college transcripts, including transcripts from transfer schools no later than the date indicated in the announcement. Transcripts may be unofficial at the time of application, but an official transcript is required if a job offer is extended.
C. You must maintain student eligibility and enrollment for the duration of the internship. If you do not maintain eligibility and enrollment, you are ineligible for this program. Please review the "REQUIREMENTS" section of the vacancy announcement to ensure that you qualify to apply to this internship.

Specialized experience for the GS-09 is defined as one year of experience at the GS-07 level, or equivalent that is directly related to the position and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Specialized experience is defined as:
  • Performing research and preparing necessary documentation as requested by attorneys in the course of litigation, investigations, and other legal work.
OR EDUCATION: Completion of two years of graduate level education, or a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree.

OR COMBINATION: You may qualify on a combination of education and experience. To combine education and experience, the total percentage of experience at the required grade level compared to the specialized experience requirement, as well as the percentage of completed education compared to the educational requirement must equal at least 100 percent. Only graduate level education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (27 quarter hours) may be combined to be considered for qualifying education.

To qualify for the GS-07 grade level, you must meet the following requirements: Specialized Experience: You may qualify with one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service.
Specialized experience for this position is defined as:
  • Performing research as requested by attorneys in the course of legal work.
OR Education- For the Internship Program you may qualify based solely on education as follows: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education, or eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree.

OR Combination: You may qualify with a combination of qualifying education and experience. (For example: the completion of 6 months of graduate education and 6 months of specialized experience.)

If qualifying with experience, the experience may have been gained in either the public or private sector. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/day/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week on your resume.

Education

You MUST meet the definition of a STUDENT for the duration of your appointment. The definition of a student is: an individual accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled), including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93-842. Students need not be in actual physical attendance, so long as all other requirements are met. An individual who needs to complete less than the equivalent of half an academic/vocational or technical course-load immediately prior to graduating is still considered a student for purposes of this Program.

An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.

Transcripts must be submitted with your application. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable with your application. However, if selected for the position, you will be required to submit your official transcript. Please note your unofficial transcripts must be recent (within last six months), show your cumulative GPA, and indicate the courses you are currently enrolled in.
