Duties

Help
  • Directs and manages a Security Forces Flight for the installation with military, dependents, DoD civilian and contractor populations and protection level resources.
  • Develops goals and objectives that integrate organization and flight objectives. Researches, interprets, analyzes and applies proper law enforcement and security guidelines, policies, and regulations.
  • Establishes local policies and procedures for accomplishment of law enforcement and security objectives.
  • Plans and schedules work in a manner that promotes a smooth flow and even distribution.
  • Serves as the work leader by planning, organizing, and coordinating the activities of three or more Police Officers.
  • Performs and enforces the full range of police officer duties within the military installation.
  • Directs or personally performs preliminary and final short-term investigations of a broad range of alleged and actual crimes occurring solely within the local installation jurisdiction.
  • Acts as the on-scene incident commander for significant and catastrophic events as required and initiates Air Force Incident Management System (AFIMS) as needed.
  • Performs the full range of installation perimeter access control duties.
  • Conducts background checks of all visitors requesting access onto the installation by identity proofing and vetting via Law Enforcement database to make a fitness determination.
  • Performs the full range of duties for defending Protection Level Resources.
  • Enforces applicable security requirements.
  • Detects and eliminates threats to the restricted area and detains and apprehends violators.
  • Processes complaints and inquiries from origination through case closure and maintains case files as appropriate.
  • Performs as Base Defense Operations Center (BDOC) Controller and Alarm Monitor.
  • Accesses law enforcement databases to retrieve information and complete reports.
  • Ensures processing in accordance with current biometric collection procedures.
  • Conducts training classes for security forces personnel.
  • Plans, coordinates, and executes training exercises.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • The duties performed in a non-federal or active duty uniformed service position must directly relate to the position to which appointed and such qualifications are necessary to achieve an important agency mission or performance goal to be eligible.
  • May be required to successfully complete a trial period.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance of the position.
  • Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day.
  • This position has been identified as a designated position under the Air Force Drug Testing Plan. Incumbent(s) of this position is subject to the possibility of a random drug test.
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
  • Must pass an initial pre-employment medical examination, periodic medical examinations, required physical fitness/physical agility tests, meet established hearing standards, and discern colors, contrast, and depth.
  • The incumbent must immediately report to his supervisor any significant medical threshold shifts in health status and/or medication requirements.

Qualifications

GS-08 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level that demonstrates your ability to plan, direct and oversee a security forces function; and supervise law enforcement work in the preservation of the peace; the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes; the arrest or apprehension of violators; and the provision of assistance to citizens in emergency situations, including the protection of civil rights. The specialized experience must also demonstrate your ability to plan and schedule work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities; assign work in consideration of employee skills and mission requirements; advise employees on work and administrative matters; implements methods and procedures to improve organizational performance; and identifies and assesses and revises policies and procedures as needed to find ways to improve quality, timeliness, and efficiency of work. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.

Additional Conditions of Employment:

  • Incumbent must be qualified in the use of required weapons, as the incumbent will be required to use firearms in performing duties. Employee is required to obtain and maintain required security clearance. Subject to annual duty position evaluation on a pass/fail standard. Must undergo initial and periodic job compatibility assessment. May be required to wear protective clothing such as coats, boots, and vests and/or chemical protective equipment, (e.g., respirator mask).
  • Must be able to operate all Security Forces Vehicles and installed equipment. An appropriate, valid driver's license is required for the position. Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
  • Must pass formal law enforcement training school as outlined upon selection. Incumbent will be exposed to the day-to-day dangers associated with law enforcement and security duties. Must obtain and maintain first responder training/certifications required in CPR techniques, self-aid buddy care and/or Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), and first aid on the job and maintain annually.
  • Recurring training is required to keep the incumbent knowledgeable on the updated specialized tactics, techniques, and procedures necessary for preparation and response to catastrophic events, terrorist attacks and related threats to installations.
  • The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as running in pursuits or emergency responses, long periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, and similar activities. Employees engage in such exertions when responding to alarms and walking foot patrols in and around buildings. This position may require common physical characteristics and abilities and dexterity and the strength to pursue and detain uncooperative suspects.
  • Ability to employ 'infantry/SWAT' small unit tactics involving fire and maneuver, with rapid advancing movement between defensive positions, while wearing protective gear for extended periods of time, (e.g., Employing "Active Shooter" response tactics and techniques as a member of a small team is required).
  • This position is designated as Essential Personnel and may be subject to duty in preparation for, or in response to, a state emergency or disaster declaration. This designation will not exceed 14 calendar days per year unless otherwise approved in advance by TAG.
