Duties

Help
  • At the GS-03 and GS-04 levels, the duties are developmental in nature leading to the full performance level of GS-05. The duties are described at the GS-05 level.
  • Participate in the day-to-day operation of recreation areas by checking the areas for compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to parking, camping, noise level, sanitation, and safety.
  • Patrol project lands and water to ensure compliance with Federal regulations.
  • Assist with inspection of a variety of service contracts including maintenance (mowing, pruning), refuse removal, janitorial, boundary maintenance, law enforcement, etc.
  • Aid in the administration of the shoreline management program.
  • Participate in activities such as fish and wildlife surveys, habitat manipulation and development, forest inventories, mapping, firefighting (prevention, suppression, controlled burning).
  • Develop interpretive programs by conducting research of topics using sources such as records, books, files, and interviews of people who have personal knowledge of a particular site or event when appropriate.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent may be required to receive a minimum of 24 hours of personal protection/unarmed self defense, situational evaluation and tactical communication training within two years of employment.
  • The employee may be required to wear the Corps' authorized uniform in the performance of duties as prescribed by AR 670-10 and supplements.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Acquire a Corps of Engineers boat operator's license within 3 years of start.
  • Incumbent must possess or be able to acquire first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and blood-borne pathogen training.
  • This position is covered by the Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Program. You must submit to a pre-employment drug screening and random testing thereafter.
  • This position requires work to be completed in inclement weather, from heights, and around water hazards.
  • This position requires rotating shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. GS-03

General and/or Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience as defined in areas such as administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work that provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public AND three months of specialized experience which includes at least one of the following: assisting in a park visitor center; maintaining informational supplies (brochures, pamphlets, etc.) at a visitor's center; providing general park information to visitors and callers; conducting routine hikes and tours of recreational areas; inspecting recreational areas for safety hazards and reporting findings to higher graded staff members.

OR

Education: One year of education above the high school level with six semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 9. Then divide your semester hours of education by 30. Add the two percentages.

GS-04

General and/or Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience which includes experience in administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work as qualifying as long as the experience provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public; AND six months of specialized experience which includes experience in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work as qualifying with specific examples such as park guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; or management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations..

OR

Education: Two years of education above the high school level with twelve semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.

GS-05

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience developing and conducting interpretative talks and guided tours, patrolling land and water areas for safety and maintenance purposes, explaining project rules and regulations, answering visitor questions and providing information on project activities and cultural, historical, and/or natural resources history and locations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with twenty-four semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.
