Duties

Help
  • Install and make major repairs and alterations to fleet electrical systems and electrical equipment.
  • Use testing equipment such as volt-ohm meter, ammeter, and megger for testing insulation and location of grounds.
  • Trace out the different circuits from schematic drawings as related to the electrical systems.
  • Assist supervisor or other craftsmen in making plumbing, carpentry and mechanical repairs and installations.
  • Diagnose trouble and repairs and installs outlets, conduit, switches, breakers, SCR's wiring, circuit coils, commutators, diodes, brushes, engine generators, starters, ignition systems, etc.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain a TWIC card and a U.S. Coast Guard License as Assistant Engineer and Tankerman PIC/Barge DL within 5 years.
  • Successfully complete and pass pre-employment physical.
  • Successfully complete and pass pre-employment drug screen, and inclusion in the randomized drug testing program.
  • Work in inclement weather conditions.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Electrician (Marine) ~ without more than normal supervision which is described as: installing and repairing electrical systems and equipment; troubleshooting and diagnosing electrical failures or malfunctions; reading and interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams and engineering drawings - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORTS: Incumbent performs work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms and where the parts, equipment, or systems are in hand-to-reach places. Work requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in a tiring and uncomfortable position. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside in weather that is occasionally disagreeable. Dirt, carbon, and grease are frequently disagreeable, caused by working on equipment in marine hulls. Noise is frequently and intensely disagreeable, caused by working in and around engine, generators, motors, gears located in holds of floating plant. Fumes and smoke are frequently unpleasant; and the wearing of a helmet is occasionally uncomfortable. Incumbent is constantly exposed to the possibility of electrocution while working on AC and DC electrical systems. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of burns or engine crankcase explosion while working on engines and generators. Incumbent is required to observe safety precautions wear appropriate safety equipment and work in the safe manner to prevent injury to self and other workmen and to prevent property damage.
