Duties

Help
  • Respond to fire alarms and emergency calls while on duty, engaged in the protection of life and property.
  • Combat fires or rescue personnel on board ships where conditions create difficult and dangerous situations.
  • Drive and operate firefighting and rescue vehicles, including 75 Foot Fireboat.
  • Operate pumps, generators, nozzles, and other firefighter equipment.
  • Perform Basic Life Support procedures: Performs emergency procedures, such as; patient assessment and physical examination, determine patient care based on initial assessment. Monitor patients baseline vital signs.
  • Manage respiratory and cardiac emergencies to include performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Assist intermediate life support or paramedic staff.
  • Wear protective clothing and breathing apparatus while performing duties, such as; fighting fires and rescuing personnel.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires the incumbent to life in excess of 45 lbs.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
  • As a "Key" position, the incumbent must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to ensure mission accomplishment of sustaining base operations during mobilization.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 48-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the incumbent to conform to the requirements set-forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.
  • Position is designated inclement weather essential.
  • TDY 10%
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain United States Coast Guard Master’s license covering the tonnage of Fireboat within 18 months of appointment.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a Tier 2 – Non-Sensitive, Moderate Risk (Public Trust) security clearance.
  • May be required to serve a 1-year probationary period.

This is a Direct Hire Authority solicitation utilizing DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; 2) Rescue operations; 3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; 4) Operations of fire communications equipment; 5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or 6) Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.


Additional Qualification Requirements: In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess Firefighter 1 & 2 Certification; Driver Operator Pumper Certification; AND Hazmat Technician Certification certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M AND a State or National Registry EMT Certification Card indicating a future expiration date when applicable.
