Summary

This position is in the Central Supply Room of the Environmental Management Service (EMS) at the Baltimore VA Medical Center (VAMC). The incumbent is responsible for the facility housekeeping equipment and supply inventory, including receipt, storage, maintenance, and distribution of HAZMAT and cleaning products, cleaning tools, and powered equipment like vacuums and buffers.

Duties

Help

Major Duties include, but not limited to:

  • Loads and unloads shipments from facility trucks.
  • Uses warehouse pallet jacks to stack, move, and arrange pallets of supplies and equipment using lifting lugs, considering height, weight, and special handling requirements and pallet measuring gauges and automated devices to ensure that proper height, weight, and other load storage requirements are met, and that damage is prevented.
  • May be required to handle hazardous supplies and sensitive materials.
  • Performs operator maintenance and coordinates repair of equipment such as battery-powered floor polishers, carpet shampooers, etc.
  • Ensures an adequate supply of mops are available in each usage area at all times.
  • During emergency situations, the incumbent may be assigned Housekeeping Aid Duties which normally consist of tasks such as dust mopping, dusting, wet mopping, scrubbing, stripping/refinishing, buffing of floors, window and wall washing, polishing and cleaning of furniture, and other related duties in assigned areas.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

The incumbent is often required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time, and to bend, stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. Lifts and carries items that weigh up to 75 pounds or more and moves equipment which may be bulky and cumbersome, weighing a few hundred pounds using weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in all areas of the medical center to include patient care areas and administrative office areas. Work is done inside or outside in areas that me be hot, damp, cold, drafty, or under dimly lit lighting conditions. Regular exposure to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls and injury from falling stock or mechanized work areas. Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
