Major duties and responsibilities will include:

Carpentry - 40%

  • Serves as a Carpenter, with primary duties of constructing, making alterations, maintaining and repairing interior and exterior building structure, roofs, associated building parts and site work.
  • Supports small and large construction, renovation and maintenance projects.
  • Performs the more difficult carpenter tasks, requiring a finished appearance at journeyman level.
  • Work in part consists of constructing installing, repairing and modifying structural units that require close tolerances for fit and structural soundness (i.e., but not limited to building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, built in furniture, etc.)
  • Performs maintenance, installation, repair, and weatherproofing of roofs. The incumbent removes old roofing in preparation for repair, assist in repairing and installing roofs.
Finishing & Plastering - 30%
  • Hangs and finishes drywall (mudding), and plasters in building, repairs interior walls and ceiling.
  • Performs new plastering on all types of backgrounds such as metal, wood or gypsum lath, wallboard, and masonry surfaces, as well as repair and patching of plaster and stucco surfaces.
  • Applies coating materials (for example, paint, varnish, lacquer, shellac, epoxy resin, and Teflon) on wood, metal, glass, synthetic, concrete, and other surfaces.
Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (AC) - 30%
  • Performs installation of fan coil units (FCU) and all associated duct work.
  • Incumbent will be able to size units based on Sq. footage and anticipated heat load of space and lay out and install all related duct work.
  • Responsible for demolition and disposal of any units and duct work that exist in the space prior to renovation.
  • Assist Industrial Controls Mechanic with all related control wiring and be able to install all DDC controls related to system such as valves and control elements. serving fan coil units.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Without more than normal supervision

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

Physical Demands and Work Environment:The duties of this position require considerable movement around the hospital and involve bending, lifting, crawling through restrictive areas, and working from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms both in- and outside buildings. The Maintenance Mechanic must frequently lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift equipment or materials weighing 50 pounds or more with proper equipment. Assignments may require standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

The Maintenance Mechanic works in all areas throughout the medical center. Inside areas may be dirty, dusty, and greasy and contain bad odors.

The Maintenance Mechanic is: subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds; exposed to moderately high noise levels; exposed to dust, fumes, and dirt; exposed to possible strains, cuts, electrical shock, bruises, burns, and infections; occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Outside duties are performed in all types of weather. The use of protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, gloves, clothing, and safety equipment is required as needed.

Hazards, physical hardships, and working conditions to which workers are exposed in performing assigned work. Positions vary in such ways as the nature of the work environment; the extent to which it includes unpleasant, disagreeable, or hazardous conditions; the degree to which such conditions are experienced; the frequency and duration of exposure; the adequacy of protective clothing and gear, safety devices, and safe trade practices; and the possible effects on the worker.

Elements considered under this factor include, but are not limited to:

1. Lighting, heating, and ventilation in work area
2. Weather conditions to which exposed when working outdoors
3. Temperature to which exposed in the work area
4. Dust, grease, and soiling of clothing and skin surfaces
5. Noise and vibration

7. Hazards in working above ground level, on slippery surfaces, or in crowded areas near power tools
