Help

Duties and skills needed to be successful in this position include, but are not limited to:

Performs all Ultrasound Examinations ranging from the routine to the highly specialized procedures.

Knows and understands the principles of Ultrasound and the highly specialized Ultrasound equipment to approve the acceptability or rejectability of each scan.

Receives and identifies patients using at least two (2) factor Identifiers, explains methods of procedures, assist movement of patients to and from wheelchair, table, positions the patient and performs examinations as requested. Evaluates the nature of the critical and emergency procedures and rearranges priorities to accommodate them.

The Technician interprets the requests or instructions from the Radiologist or Clinician. Receives assignments for a variety of difficult examinations and works independently. Follow departmental Policy and procedure manual.

Controls technical factors on Ultrasound Unit, which will affect time, gain, amplitude velocity, frequency, attenuation, absorption, reflection, scattering, refraction and diffraction. Selects between non-focused, fixed-focus, linear phased array, and annular phased array.

The Technician must demonstrate skills in performing complex ultrasound procedures including color flow, Doppler carotid and arterial Doppler exams.

The physical demands of the work require long periods of standing, waling, and sitting. Work involves constant bending, lifting, twisting, and carrying moderately heavy items such as cassettes. Use of ultrasound units requires twisting, turning, to manipulate the unit. The work requires pushing wheelchair and stretcher patients. Positioning patients who are unconscious, incapacitated patients is done only with the help of other employees.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Certification. Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable.
In addition, can you demonstrate the following Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Advanced knowledge of complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program.
  • Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations.
  • Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget. 26
  • Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation; selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions.

Grade Determinations: 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-9)

Preferred Experience: 5+ years of General Diagnostic Ultrasound Experience
