Duties

Help

The Library Aid (Office Automation):

  • Assists patrons at the circulation desk by checking materials in and out, renewing and reserving items, answering phones, providing directions, and explaining library policies; refers complex inquiries to the supervisor.
  • Registers patrons by verifying ID cards and prepares overdue notices as needed.
  • Shelves returned and new materials accurately by classification; maintains shelf order through reading, shifting, and sorting.
  • Searches for missing or misfiled items and reports materials requiring re-labeling, repair, rebinding, or replacement.
  • Helps process new acquisitions and bindery items by attaching labels, stamps, book cards, and performing minor repairs or mending; assists with salvage and disposal of obsolete materials.
  • Types order cards, catalog cards, reports, and memoranda; edits drafts for grammar and spelling in accordance with established guidelines.

The ideal candidate is a dependable, service-oriented individual with strong organizational skills and attention to detail. They will provide excellent support at the circulation desk, ensure accurate shelving and material handling, assist with basic processing and repairs, and perform clerical tasks with accuracy and professionalism.  A commitment to maintaining a well-organized, user-friendly library environment is essential.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet either the education or specialized experience requirements.

To qualify on Experience, you must have at least six months of specialized experience equal or equivalent to the following: 

  • Experience performing library support tasks such as assisting patrons at a circulation desk, checking materials in and out, registering users, preparing overdue notices, and providing basic information about library policies and procedures.
  • Experience  shelving and organizing materials according to a classification system, locating and identifying misfiled or damaged items, and assisting with the processing, labeling, and minor repair of library materials.
  • Experience performing routine clerical duties such as typing catalog cards, reports, and other documents with attention to accuracy and detail.

To qualify on Education, you must be:

  • High school graduation or equivalent 1 year above high school.

You can also qualify based on a combination of Education and Experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
