Help

As a Highway Accident Investigator, GS-1801-14, you will perform the following major duties:

  • Write and lead the development of highway crash investigation reports in collaboration with investigative teams.
  • Lead special projects such as investigative hearings, symposiums, and responses to external requests (e.g., public inquiries, notices of proposed rulemakings).
  • Serve as a Group Chairperson leading the investigation of safety issues in areas of technical expertise (human factors, vehicle factors, motor carrier factors, highway factors or survival factors).
  • Research, review, and study existing and proposed highway transportation Federal legislation, regulations, national industry standards, guidelines or specifications established by government agencies and technical societies/associations pertaining to highway transportation safety.
  • Develop and make formal presentations to national and local groups to exchange technical information.
  • Serve as Duty Officer.

Qualifications

For GS-14: You MUST have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector). Specialized experience is defined as: Experience applying at least one highway investigative area (human factors, motor carrier factors, vehicle factors, highway factors, or survival factors) while conducting highway crash investigations or highway safety research; writing reports of highway crash investigations or transportation safety research, including analyzing factual data as well as identifying relevant conclusions and safety recommendations; experience providing formal oral presentations about the results of crash investigations or transportation safety research to diverse audiences, including at a state or national level; and experience independently planning and managing the implementation of projects such as research studies, public hearings, or technical meetings.
