Duties

Help
  • Perform the full range of overhaul and repair work on a variety of mobile industrial and fixed industrial equipment.
  • Disassemble, repair and or build components and assemblies such as engines and transmissions.
  • Disassemble, repair supercharged and turbo-charged engines, automatic and non-automatic transmissions and gear reduction systems.
  • Disassemble, diagnose and or repair electronic circuits and basic logic circuits to power, timing, and motion controls.
  • Disassemble, diagnose and or repair components such as switches, sensors, relays, timers, counters, motor starters.
  • Disassemble, diagnose, replace and or repair a variety of other electrical equipment, such as batteries, battery chargers, electric motors.
  • Determine the exact nature and extent of repairs needed.
  • Research and order parts using appropriate technical orders.
  • Replace, rework, or refinish worn or damaged parts.
  • Conduct functional and performance tests on completed work.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.

The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is:

  • Ability to do the work of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision such as: replace or adjust parts in accordance with oral instructions or work orders.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Effort: Work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching, handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and often similar effort in pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools, and lifting/moving of heavier items with the assistance of other workers and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists and cranes. The employee works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods, e.g., works on the top of and under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions, or performs strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting.

Working Conditions: Works inside and outside. While inside, is exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. While outside, may work in bad weather, mud or snow, and wet or icy areas. Frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes and from hard, damp floors or ground. Typically works on parts and systems which are dirty, oily, or greasy. Frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises and sprains while repairing, positioning and moving equipment. Often exposed to possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from acids, fluids and lubricants. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, respirators and protective clothing, some of which may be uncomfortable to wear or use, and may be worn or used for long periods.
