Duties

Help
  • Making, repairs and installs storage and shipping items such as boxes, small crates, pallets, dividers and storage bins using wood, wood composites and substitutes, steel bracing and appropriate packing materials.
  • With specific instructions, be able to complete construction plans, makes and repairs small and medium boxes, crates, pallets and other similar items.
  • The ability to measures to the correct dimensions using yardsticks, rulers, etc.
  • Uses a variety of common assembly procedures and established work sequences to band, bolt screw, or otherwise fasten parts together using existing jigs, templates, models, or guides.
  • Operation of materials handling equipment such as warehouse tractor (tug), standard type forklifts with lifting capacity of less than, 10,000 pounds; utility or general-purpose vehicles.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license/certification to operate government vehicles.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.


Physical Effort
Uses power and manual tools and devices that typically involve continuous physical effort and extended periods of standing, bending, and stooping while building or repairing containers and material shipping devices. Lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and frequently lift and move heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with material handling equipment.

Working Conditions
Work in warehouses or other enclosed areas that may be drafty, cold, or overheated. Occasionally required to work outside for short periods of time where they are subject to prevailing weather conditions. Subject to noise and dusk from power saws, hammers, nailing machines, and related equipment. Exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises and scrapes, and other injuries from using hand and power tools. Safety equipment and protective devices including safety glasses, earplugs, gloves, and proper clothing are used to minimize hazards.
