Duties

Help

The journeyman Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic performs maintenance, repair, installation, modification, overhaul, trouble shooting and makes adjustments to complex heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and refrigeration equipment throughout the Medical Center. The major duties and responsibilities include but is not limited to the following:

  • Changing filters and cleaning coil surfaces on a wide variety of heating and cooling equipment, including furnaces, air handling units and fan coil units.
  • Cleaning and repairing fan coil units to include replacement of multi-speed motors, fans, and switches.
  • Removing covers to fan coil units and making visual and audible checks for dust, dirt, and mechanical and electrical defects.
  • Using prescribed test procedures, voltage testers, and hand tools common to the trade in locating problems and repairing fan coil units.
  • Cleaning and purging air out of lines so that water will circulate replaces electrical components such as 3-speed switches, thermostat relays, thermostats, on-off switches, etc.
  • Repairing or replacing structural components such as tops and doors, knobs, and latches.
  • Replacing pump motors and pumps on all air handling units.
  • Using best trade practices in recovering refrigerant, leak testing, troubleshooting and other refrigerant tasks - performing preventative maintenance on a variety of equipment to Fan Coil Units including refrigeration air dryer units, air compressors, evaporators, belt driven exhaust fans, heating and cooling circulating pumps, chillers, and cooling towers and pumps.
  • Changing filters on air handling units, greases motors and bearings, and checks and replaces belts and performing other limited repairs as required.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent may be required to bend, reach, and hold awkward positions for prolonged periods. Frequently works from ladders, platforms, high places, and cramped spaces. Considerable climbing, walking, and stooping are also required for this position. The incumbent handles and carries equipment and tools weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and carries objects over 50 pounds either alone or with others. Uses hydraulic lift and dolly and is assisted by shop personnel when lifting or transporting heavier objects. Normally works from floor and ladders, but occasionally works from platforms and scaffolding to reach heating and cooling units. Work requires stooping, stretching, bending, kneeling, and crawling in cramped places.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Preferred Experience: Commercial HVAC/Chiller and Steam Heating Systems

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
