Summary

The Interventional Radiologic Technologist (IR) at the GS-9 level serves in an advanced developmental capacity at the full performance DRT level. He/she must have the ability to reconcile unfamiliar or unusual situations for more complex patient issues. The incumbent must be able to prioritize and triage all imaging situations in the Interventional Radiology Section. The incumbent independently performs routine general radiology, portable x-ray, 0. R., and Interventional procedures.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Perform radiographic duties in the Interventional Radiology (IR) specialty modality.
  • Knowledge of Vascular, organ human anatomy and its application in Angiographic, 3d angiography, inclusive of3-D CT
    based reconstruction rotational angiograms, including drainages, biopsies, hybrid scrub support duties and peripheral vascular
    examinations.
  • Administer contrast media and medications in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
  • Provides sterile catheter and guidewire manipulation assistance when applicable and performs scrub and catheter manipulation assistance for catheter access during iodinated contrast exams
  • Performs most exams utilizing surgical sterile techniques. This requires "scrub-in technique," preparation of surgical trays, preparation of contrast, supplying of catheters and guide wires, sterile assurance of the patient and equipment that may come in contact with the sterile field with the purpose of assuring that all preventive measures have been taken to prevent contamination of the patient.
  • Provides sterile catheter and guidewire manipulation assistance when applicable and performs scrub and catheter manipulation assistance for catheter access during iodinated contrast exams.
  • Advises Radiologists or referring physicians of examination results and notifies them of anomalies requiring their immediate
    attention.
  • Responsible for properly identifying patients according to Medical Center and service policies and procedures. This is essential so that mistaken identity of patient images does not occur. The technologist must be certain that the patient I.D. band and the request are identical.
  • Schedules routine examinations and accommodates emergency examinations
  • Provides stocking and inventory control over assigned section and orders supplies when appropriate
  • Ensure productivity is maintained at the established level for the program for which he/she is responsible.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g.)
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.
  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
  • Credentialing Standards: Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).


Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the basic requirements listed above, applicants must meet the following grade requirements for a GS-09 DRT:

Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):

i. *Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
ii. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
iii. *Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
iv. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
v. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.
vi. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.

The full performance level of this vacancy is Gs-09. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-09.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work includes: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); speed in working; and emotional stability. Must have the ability to stand and work while wearing a lead apron for possibly long periods of time.
