Duties

Help
  • Serve as the focal point for all DHA R and D safety matters, including DHA Occupational Safety and Health program; Traffic/Driving Safety; Recreation, Home Safety; Fire Protection and Prevention; Heat Stress control, and Risk Management.
  • Conduct mishap investigations, annual OSHA workplace inspections/assessments, command inspections (Enterprise Assessment Program assessments) and laboratory facility preoperational surveys.
  • Establish, coordinate, direct, and evaluate the effectiveness of DHA R and D safety policies, plans, programs, and procedures.
  • Interpret safety regulations and OSHA standards and participate in the development of new or revised safety standards.
  • Maintain injury/illness mishap data, analyze reports, and initiate action to improve safety program.

DHA Research & Development (R&D) is participating in an alternative personnel system known as the Personnel Demonstration Project (PDP). The DJ-03 payband is equivalent to the GS-11 step 1 to GS-12 step 10 level. In keeping with the Demonstration pay fixing policies, employees earning a salary that falls within this payband equivalent, may not receive an immediate pay increase (promotion) if appointed to this position. Future pay increases within the payband will be accomplished through the pay for performance management system.


In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Qualifications Requirements for Safety & Occupational Health Specialist:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:

1. Experience implementing safety and occupational health program elements for research, development and engineering programs and facilities.

2. Experience applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and/or procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements.

3. Experience facilitating safety and occupational health councils and committees.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

OR

Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
