Help
  • Operates power machines such as shaper, lathe, key seaters, milling machine, radial drill, surface grinder, boring mill, and hydraulic press.
  • Uses hand tools such as saws, files, hones and hammers, and measuring devices as represented by micrometers, calipers, and shop rules.
  • Works outside of machine shop on floating dry-docks to assist with the removal and installations of rudders, props, shafts and cutlass bearings on vessels of various sizes.
  • Uses a variety of measuring and marking tools, including rules, vernier calipers, inside and outside micrometers, dial indicators, surface gages, squares, protractors and height gages.
  • Sets machine stops and feeds strips to control rate of feed and speed of tools.
  • Write CNC programs and apply shop mathematics and handbook formulas to compute and establish dimensions for planning and laying out the work.

In order to qualify, you must meet the EXPERIENCE requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Machinist without more than normal supervision.

WG-5: Manufacture parts and complete items of equipment from raw stock of different kind of metals and metal alloys and other materials, and perform machining work required in the manufacture of castings, forgings, weldments, and other fabrications.-Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating

WG-8: Carrying out assignments which require machining of surfaces at unusual or compound angles and the use of conventional and non-conventional machine tools such as jig borers, lathes, vertical and horizontal boring mills, and numerically controlled machine tools. Performs precision handwork.-Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

WG-10: Use conventional machine tools and Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine tools required in the manufacture of castings, forgings, weldments, and other fabrications. I can apply shop math; interpret and work from blue prints, work orders, shop drawings, etc.-Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work of the WG-10 Machinist requires standing, stooping, bending, reaching, frequent handling of objects weighing up to 35 pounds and occasionally objects weighing as much as 50 pounds. However, hoists, hand trucks, lifts and other workers are available to assist with heavier items.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Inside work is accomplished in a well-lighted, heated, ventilated shop with concrete floors. Outside work is subject to working in in climate weather. Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noises and fumes. Subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from use of machines and hand tools, skin irritations from contact with coolants, lubricants, abrasive compounds and strains from infrequent moving, lifting and handling of heavy items. Wears safety glasses, safety shoes and other safety apparel and equipment as required. Working conditions have been considered in the evaluation of the job and environmental differential is not warranted for the duties performed.

    • - Scissor lift operator's license
    • - Aerial boom lift operator's license
  • Various protective devices such as safety shoes and glasses, gloves, respirators, and hard hats must be used.
  • Position requires participation in and compliance with the Respiratory Protection Program.
  • Requires some travel at approximately 30% and employee may be required to serve up to 3 to 4 months continuous deployments per season. This could entail working away from home, on the river or other places for 3 to 4 months straight year after year.
  • This position requires lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Position requires frequent overtime, after hours, and weekend on-call status to support critical project and facility requirements.
