  • Serve as Station Chief with responsibility for the operational readiness and organizational maintenance of firefighting equipment.
  • Assume immediate direction and control of operations at all types of emergency incidents until relieved by an Assistant Chief or the Fire Chief.
  • Employee assists in establishing and updating division policies and procedures.
  • Serve as Shift Training Officer and establishes a training schedule to cover established regulatory requirements.
  • Direct, instruct, and coordinate drills and other scheduled training for assigned crew members.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident. Incumbent is required to sign a DA FORM 5019-R.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Employee must participate in and pass all aspects of the Fire and Emergency Services Division Wellness Program. Structured Physical Exercise Program, Annual Physical Examination, Annual Physical Performance Evaluation, and On-The-Spot Drug Screening.
  • The employee is subject to periodic travel and is subject to immediate recall, with or without advanced notice.
  • Incumbent will have to pass a pre-employment physical to meet Physical Efforts requirements. This position may require an annual physical or medical surveillance examination.
  • This is an inclement weather position. The incumbent is expected to make every attempt to report for duty on time and/or remain on duty during inclement weather conditions.
  • Incumbent may be required to perform call duties; work overtime to include weekends and federal holidays, out of cycle, or unscheduled training or on an emergency basis.
  • The work will require the incumbent to work evenings/nights; rotating shifts, extended hours or other schedules common to operations.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.

Specialized Experience is defined as: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service which includes: 1) Experience instructing firefighting personnel on methods and procedures utilizing knowledge of principles in teaching; 2) Experience directing subordinates to suppress fires on Structural and fire emergencies, respond to Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) incidents, and direct crews on emergency medical incidents; and 3) Experience inspecting fire protection systems, fire detection systems and fire safety equipment to ensure proper operation.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job at the GS-09 grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
