Duties

Help
  • Provide day-to-day planning, management, coordination, and direction for a staff of forensic scientists.
  • Oversee departmental technical and procedural protocols that document how analyses and examinations are conducted.
  • Manage the Forensic Expeditionary Team (FXT) instrumentation and equipment modernization and/or life cycle replacement program.
  • Troubleshoot scientific instrumentation to assess the cause of failures that lead to inaccurate results.
  • Evaluate the results of forensic examinations performed to prepare laboratory reports.
  • Evaluate employee performance based on objectives, standards, and policies.
  • Set priorities, prepare work schedules, and assign cases to subordinate employees.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance.
  • Position requires employee to sign a DA Form 5019-R and pass urinalysis testing as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter. Position is subject to random drug testing IAW AR 600-85.
  • Must file an initial and annual OGE-450, Confidential Financial Disclosure Report.
  • Must undergo-pre-employment and pre-deployment physicals to assess physical abilities to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position may require the incumbent to carry a firearm. Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition (Title 18, U.S.C., Section 922(g)(91)).
  • Travel for extended periods of time will be required in response to crime scenes, courts, life-cycle training worldwide, and FXT management.
  • This position requires extended temporary duty travel (TDY) and/or deployment to contingency and/or humanitarian relief areas, worldwide, in support of the mission of the Defense Forensic Science Center (DFSC).
  • This position is designated as Emergency Essential.
  • May be required to wear protective equipment (respirators, safety glasses, etc).
  • Must possess and maintain the physical ability to lift up to 70 lbs to working heights of 48 inches. Pre-employment physical required.
  • Shiftwork may be required, extending up to 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week.
  • Position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Must participate in the DNA profiling database within the Forensic Exploitation Department.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Supervisory Chemist, GS-1320-14:

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work equivalent to a major in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes examining, analyzing and reporting on evidence in forensic explosive and/or drug chemistry; leading a team of multi-disciplinary scientists to ensure forensic services meet mission objectives; and overseeing forensic chemistry technical procedures, quality controls and proficiency testing program. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-13).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-13).
