Duties

Help
  • Independently directs, plans, designs, and executes genetic counseling research within the branch.
  • Oversees recruitment of research participants for clinical genetic research protocols.
  • Monitors and reports on the status of the overall project at monthly multi-disciplinary meetings.
  • Provides expert advice on a wide variety of matters related to rare genetic disorder findings from genomic variation sequencing, genetic counseling research, and new developments in the delivery of genetics services.
  • Provides expert consultation to sequencing laboratories in North America, genetic counselors, and other medicine specialists, and in the community.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Geneticist, GS-0440 position, you must have a bachelor's degree in genetics or one of the basic biological sciences that include at least 9 semester hours in genetics; or a graduate degree in a curriculum or pattern of training that placed major emphasis on genetics.

In addition, in order to qualify for a Geneticist at the GS-14 level, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: independently plan, and design genetic counseling research; oversee subject enrollment, data collection, analysis and all other aspects of clinical research; provide genetic counseling to patients; evaluate effectiveness of genetic counseling and initiate changes in methods and procedures as needed; monitor and report out on the status of research projects, making recommendations for solutions to improve efficiency; and attends conferences and meetings to maintain current awareness of emerging issues in the field of genetics.
