Duties

Help

The Public Safety Assistant:

  • Issues parking permits to staff, faculty, Midshipman, and other personnel visiting the Academy. Validates registration documents to ensure validity and current operational status. Verifies criminal history background with federal and state databases to enhance the security posture of the campus.
  • Processes students for initial issuance and receipt of PIV-I cards, reissues PIV-I cards on an as needed basis. Maintains a database on all students, and programs PIV-I credentials for access into restricted areas.   Issues PIV cards to government employees as required.
  • Receives, routes, and processes all incoming correspondence and action documents; reads all incoming correspondence, screens all items to be handled personally, and forwards remainder to department staff for action. Prepares correspondence, reports, and records in final form from rough draft; ensures correct punctuation, capitalization, spelling, grammar, and conformance to style.
  • Receives, reviews, corrects, and maintains contract security guards’ duty schedules, daily logs, daily reports, citations, and other associated files. Provides documents to the Director for review and action if required.

The ideal candidate will possess a variety of technical and procedural support duties relative to law enforcement operations, physical security, and personal security. The candidate will be proficient in computer operations, maintenance of database files, providing customer service, and organizing and filing reports according to government recordkeeping requirements.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
  • TYPING: You must possess a typing speed of at least 40 words per minute with three (3) or fewer errors.
  • TIME-IN-GRADE: Federal applicants must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade in the competitive or excepted service in the executive branch to satisfy time-in-grade restrictions contained in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F.
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the specialized experience requirements.

To qualify for the GS-06, you must have at least one year of equal or equivalent experience equal to the GS-05, which includes:

  • Experience using IT equipment, automated databases, and maintaining automated or hardcopy files.
  • Experience in providing customer service and utilizing effective communication skills when interfacing with the Academy community.
  • Experience applying physical security principles in the area of access control, key control, and vehicle registration management.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
