Help

As an Interdisciplinary Supervisory Biologist/Hydrologist/Geologist (Chief Science Officer) within the Upper Midwest Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Serves as the CSO and assists the Director in matters related to the management and supervision of science and interpretative-studies program activities and personnel within the Center.
  • Maintains oversight of all matters related to development and long-range planning of interpretative programs, and project development, management, and completion. This also includes advising the Center Director on personnel resources allocation and management for studies, report development, improvement, and processing
  • Exercises first-line supervision of the Science Team Leaders and the Science Coordinator to provide center wide cohesion and maximize collaboration and science impact across all programs of the center, including those carried on in cooperation with local, State, tribal, and other Federal agencies. Fosters and maintains a work environment that provides for professional, as well as personal development and advancement of all studies personnel
  • Ensures timely performance of a satisfactory amount and quality of work and for accepting, amending, or rejecting reports and data submitted by employees under the incumbent's direction. Oversees the technical quality of the Center's interpretive programs by establishing an environment which fosters continual scientific advancement and learning so that the USGS in Michigan-Minnesota-Wisconsin can best meet the evolving data and scientific needs of the Nation regarding water resources
  • Plans, directs, and/or carries out complex scientific studies or significant components of very large studies. Authors proposals, administrative reports, fact sheets, briefing documents, and program review documents. Results of such investigations serve as authoritative references for water managers and often are the basis for water-resources decisions.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment.   • Relocation expenses are authorized.
  • This position requires completion of a one year supervisory/managerial probationary period, if one has not previously been completed.

Qualifications

For Biologist GS-0401:

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.

A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

*OR*

B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

For Hydrologist GS-1315:

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. **OR

B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

For Geologist GS-1350:

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

For GS-14:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience could include serving as a senior expert involved in biological/hydrologic/geological work for which technical problem definitions, methods and/or data were highly incomplete, controversial, or uncertain and whose evaluations and recommendations were accepted by others as those of a technical expert in hydrology. At this level, Biologist/Hydrologists/Geologists typically represent an authoritative source of consultation for other scientists and program specialists, are called upon to resolve issues that significantly affect biological/hydrologic/geological programs, make long range and controversial proposals and defend their findings and recommendations in public or high level forums.
