Duties

If selected for this position, your duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide scientific and technical direction to, and oversee, a large translational and clinical evaluation program within VRC focused on the application of cutting-edge research technologies to a wide variety of fundamental, translational, and clinical research projects. Directs scientific work and efforts in performing such activities as conducting end-point immune analysis; producing, monitoring, and distributing of key standard reagents to other collaborator laboratories; serving as the repository of immunological data for distribution to statistical centers, collaborators; implementing and developing new high-throughput immunological methodologies; transferring assay technology from both intra and extramural NIAID labs and collaborators; and processing clinical trial samples and their cryopreservation.
  • Manage budgetary, space, other resources, and personnel requirements, including managing and overseeing operating expenditures, costs related to service and maintenance contracts, and the acquisition and appropriate use of equipment, miscellaneous supplies items, etc.; develop and justify budgetary requests for VRC management approval and reports on the allocation and dispensing of funds; and is accountable for the execution of the Program budget by tracking expenditures and adjusting resource expenditures as needed throughout the fiscal year.
  • As a recognized expert and NIAID authority on leading cutting-edge research pertaining to HIV and infectious disease vaccines and studies to advance the scientific understanding of T- and B-cell immunobiology, serve as a primary liaison on vaccine research and development matters with NIH research collaborators and with external research investigators and organizations; establish and maintain working relationships with other NIH Institutes and Centers, other Federal agencies, and/or external research organizations.
  • As the Chief, VIP, the incumbent provides leadership and direction to the Program staff federal and contract staff. As a first-level supervisor, the incumbent performs the following functions: Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work; Assigns work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments, and the capabilities of employees; Evaluates work performance of subordinates.

Qualifications

To qualify for the Supervisory Health Scientist, GS-601-15, you must meet the following qualification requirements:

Education Requirement:
You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. (This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained).

AND

Additional Requirement:
You must demonstrate, in your resume one (1) full year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal Service obtained in either the private or public sector that equips you with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of this position, such as the following: 1) Selection, design, use, and interpretation of assays to measure immune responses in human volunteers; 2) development and application of cutting edge technologies to establish, validate, and automate highly versatile assays characterizing the outcomes of vaccine clinical trials; 3) establishing operating procedures and work standards for a large, complex vaccine program; 4) serving as a subject matter expert on prospective assay requirements for various stages of the vaccine development process; 5) and conducting novel assays in conjunction with the development of new vaccines and the conduct of clinical trials.
