Duties

Help
  • You will search in major research databases such as Online Computer Library Center and Columbia International Affairs Online as well as the library's discovery system.
  • You will compile selective and comprehensive bibliographies, both annotated and unannotated, on historical and current topics of user interests.
  • You will provide content for Library web, social media and current awareness services.
  • You will give instructions to faculty, participants, staff, alumni, and other users on the content, nature and use of library resources.
  • You will create resource-specific tutorials, tip sheets, guides, and other information tools.
  • You will keep faculty informed about library programs, resources, and services.
  • You will make recommendations for the purchase of disposition of materials in all formats, including equipment and/or technology capabilities.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a Professional Librarian with compiling selective and comprehensive bibliographies, on historical and current topics of interests; receive, analyze, and respond to reference and research questions of a broad scope and depth in areas of interest in support of the library's mission.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:

Successful completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree;
OR
A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.

Educational Substitution for the GS-09:

In lieu of general/specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

Successful completion of a master's degree in Library Science or equivalent graduate degree
or
Successful completion of 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education
or
Possession of LL.B. or J.D., related to the position.
or
A combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience.

Incumbent may be required to work outside normal and predetermined work schedule to accomplish mission requirements.

Term appointments may be extended up to 8 years at the discretion of management and in accordance with applicable regulations. Additionally, you may be noncompetitively converted to a permanent career-conditional or career appointment under specific conditions.
