Summary

This position is located within the NNSA, Nevada Field Office in Las Vegas, NV. The individual selected will serve as a Fire Protection Engineer, responsible for vital fire protection safety systems identified for each nuclear facility and include, but are not limited to, electrical power, lightning protection, blast door interlocks, radiation monitoring, hoists and cranes, containment/confinement systems, process systems, and communications.

EN-0804-00:

  • Monitors project operations, performance, and quality assurance advising about NNSA and NFO policies and regulations.
  • Conducts office, library, and/or Internet searches for plans and designs; analyzes technical reports or data to obtain information for assignment related information, determines data relevancy and organizes factual, economic, and financial, fire protection engineering, and /or architectural information.
EN-0804-3:
  • Review the application of systems, components, and safety management programs to prevent or mitigate the hazards that may be present in nuclear explosive or nuclear material facilities.
  • Provide technical review of proposed controls and their implementation for nuclear explosive and nuclear material operations.
  • Provide federal oversight of the planning, coordination and implementation of controls and safety systems to meet the requirements of 10 CFR 830, DOE Order 420.1, and 452.2.
  • Provide federal oversight of Safety System operability determinations or evaluations for safety systems with identified deficient conditions and other nuclear safety duties as required.

Qualifications

EN-0804-00:
A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower NNSA pay band or GS grade level in the Federal service i.e., GS-04 equivalent. Specialized experience is defined as experience participating as a member of a team, or as an assistant to a senior staff member in efforts that involve application of fire engineering principles, practices, and techniques on assigned portions of tasks, projects, and program management efforts.


Examples of Qualified Experience:

1. Experience assists in developing assigned fire management project materials and assists in executing project plans.
2. Experience reviewing, assessing and/or maintaining project and/or contract documentation, resources, reports, correspondences, and publications.
3. Experience preparing computer programs for processing data, completes, calculates, plots, reviews, interprets, explains analyses, computations, estimate areas, volumes, quantities, calculations, and numerical data.

EN-0804-3:

A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower NNSA pay band or GS grade level in the Federal service i.e., EN-02 or GS-11. Specialized experience is defined as experience applying fire management theories, concepts, principles, and methodologies sufficient to research, analyze, interpret, evaluate, and accomplish difficult but conventional assignments involving nuclear facilities, conduct analytical investigations, research and articulate information during discussions, briefings, and presentations.

Examples of qualifying experience includes:

1.Experience in fire engineering and sciences related to environmental
compliance and permitting of nuclear and non-nuclear hazardous facilities.
2.Experience in project management principles and practices and the ability to apply these to management of complex federal projects.
3.Experience establishing a working knowledge of the principles and concepts of the Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) as they relate to the discharging of organizational responsibilities and requirements.
4.Experience effectively working with a wide variety of individuals on technical issues.

Education

All applicants must meet the basic requirements of the General Engineer occupational series. Transcripts or other proof of required education MUST be included in application package. 801 - Degree: professional engineering. The curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

OR

Combination of education and experience: college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. There are alternate methods to meeting the engineering educational requirement (e.g., holding current professional engineering registration, having passed the EIT examination, or having completed specified academic courses or a related degree).
