Summary

The Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Technician - Clinical Pharmacy Technician has a primary focus of providing exceptional care to our veterans by ensuring timely, accurate responses to questions/concerns in the form of view alerts, secure message and telephone communication, quality assurance monitoring, and providing the logistical and automation support necessary to consistently supply our outpatient clinics with medications and pharmaceutical supplies.

Help

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Interviews patients, family members and/or caregivers to develop an accurate list of medications, drug strengths, dosages and instructions the patient has been taking.
    • Assesses patient compliance with prescribed therapy through patient/caregiver interview and review of refill dates.
    • Compares the compiled list with the active medication profile in the computerized medical record of the patient.
    • Documents the compiled list with the active medication profile in the computerized medical record of the patient.
    • Documents the compiled list in the electronic medical record, noting and discrepancies or omissions within 24 hours of the patient encounter.
    • Notifies the overseeing pharmacist of any discrepancies, omissions, questions or concerns regarding the patient.
  • Provides medication reconciliation to outside facilities and providers via telephone.
  • Provides in person, electronic or telephone triage and patient follow-up as the primary contact for all veteran questions/concerns that come through in person in clinic, telephone, secure message or electronic medical record.
  • Routinely reviews computer medication profile for prescription duplication, therapeutic duplication, prescription noncompliance and allergies/adverse drug reactions. Reports identified patients to assigned clinical pharmacist or clinical pharmacy practitioner for evaluation.
  • Ensures timely resolution of veteran questions/concerns by either funding the solution/answer or triaging to the most appropriate contact.
  • Provides supplemental reinforcement education for patients concerning operational issues or needs for medication noncompliance.
  • Works closely with centralized scheduling and operator staff to help assist in resolving all veteran questions/concerns.
  • Responsibilities for gathering data to be used in operational reports and quality improvement activities.
  • Communicates orally and in writing in a manner that supports the needs of the customer promoting a harmonious relationship.
  • Reviews population management dashboards to identify patients that may benefit from pharmacist intervention, calls patients and scheduled accordingly.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases.
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Certification: Active national certification through either:
    • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT), OR
    • National Healthcareer Association (NHA) as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:
GS-08 (Above Full Performance Level)
  • Experience: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, to qualify for the GS-08 you must have completed at least one (1) year of qualifying experience at the GS-07 level or equivalent.
AND

GS-08 Knowledge, skills and abilities, that must be clearly demonstrated in your resume:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.).
  • Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures.
  • Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-08.

Physical Requirements: This work requires some physical exertion such as prolonged periods of standing, bending, reaching, crouching, stooping, stretching, and lifting moderately heavy items such as manuals, record boxes, equipment or assisting patients.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
