Duties

Help
  • Independently responsible for the technical and safe operation of equipment when carrying put work assignments.
  • Serve as the primary operator of a large barge mounted crane (285-ton capacity, and 200-foot boom) required in the maintenance and repair of navigation locks and dams and the navigation channel on the McClelland-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System.
  • During 24-hour operations, is responsible for passing on instruction to other shift operators of the crane to assure continuity and safety of operations and proper operations and maintenance of the equipment.
  • Maneuverability of the crane is highly restricted and accuracy is very critical in most of the operations.

  • Must possess a valid state driver's license.
  • Incumbent must possess a valid Crane Operator certification issued by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) and maintain this certification throughout the duration of employment.
  • The certificate must specify certification in Lattice Boom Crawler Cranes, Telescopic Boom Cranes with fixed cabs and Telescopic Boom Cranes with swing cabs.
  • Safe work practices are an integral part of this position. Incumbent is required to know, comply with, and promote prescribed safety rules and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Crane Operator without more than normal supervision. This includes moving large, heavy, and/or awkward loads where the crane is near its lifting capacity with the operator relying upon feel alone. Efficient in operating a crane at or near the crane's lifting capacity to pick up, position, and lower objects on a floating plant; using a crane to construct, maintain or repair navigation locks and dams or similar infrastructure (i.e. bridges, buildings, etc); Performing preventative maintenance on cranes on a floating plant - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) and Ability to Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle)
  • Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation)
  • Reliability and dependability as a Crane Operator
  • Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order)


PHYSICAL EFFORT
Majority of work requires moderate to heavy physical effort in the manipulation of the equipment controls and involves standing, pulling, bending, stooping, and sitting. Is subject to strain caused by the crane's vibrations plus the jerking and jolting motions from the loads. The adverse conditions are compounded by the fact that the crane barge is subject to both lateral and vertical movements due to wind, currents, and surging of the water level. On occasion, may be required to lift and carry items or materials in weighing in excess of 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Working Conditions: Subject to hazards of moving machinery, swinging loads, overturning and breaking of cables. Performs work under changing weather conditions. Normally works in close proximity to workmen on the ground or deck of plant. Is exposed to noise, heat, dust, dirt, grease and fumes from machinery. There is some danger in walking on wet decks and falling overboard.
