Summary

As an Electronics Technician in the Avionics and Instrumentation Branch at Armstrong Flight Research Center, you'll provide technical support for complex avionics and instrumentation on aerospace vehicles, fixtures, and payloads, including prototype or non-standard and standard avionics and instrumentation systems, equipment, and parts. Responsibilities include assisting with projects, designing, developing, modifying, repairing, maintaining, fabricating, and installing avionics systems.

Help
  • Analyzes repair practices and develops procedural instructions to be used by others on methods and steps to repair and modify electronic equipment on aircraft or on airworthy components.
  • Plans and performs modification, maintenance, and installation of complex and unique systems on UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) or manned aircraft; collaborates with partners, contractors, and researchers from other organizations who modify equipment.
  • Designs and analyzes circuits, determines design feasibility, evaluates equipment performance under varying environmental conditions, and collects relevant performance data.
  • Completes testing, evaluates data, and determines acceptability of equipment modifications, validity, test procedures and data, and/or legality of operation.
  • Supports professional engineers in performing experiments, research, and development activities requiring an in-depth knowledge of technical engineering methods, applications, practices, and principles to work on concepts and experimental projects.
  • Analyzes and diagnoses faults in the operational configuration of electronic systems and equipment.
  • Evaluates the adequacy of equipment for repair, calibration, and testing.

  • This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete a Class III Flight Physical and routinely lift, carry, and move materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • This position requires the incumbent to successfully pass a vision test per NASA-STD-8739.6 and obtain and maintain a valid state and flightline driver's license and CPR certification.
  • This position may require a one-year trial period.

Qualifications

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

To qualify for GS-11, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 level in the Federal service.
  • Developing and/or applying procedural instructions or methods of aircraft repair practices for the maintenance, repair, or operation of equipment/systems;
  • Repairing aircraft electrical and electronics systems and/or installing, servicing, troubleshooting, and maintaining avionics systems on modified aircraft;
  • Providing technical information associated with the eventual fabrication, repair, and/or modification of standard aircraft, research instrumentation systems, payloads, test devices, or prototype components.
