Summary

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: Serves as a mechanic on board floating plant units engaged in construction and maintenance of shore protection and channel control work on inland waterway. Operates and/or maintains and repairs marine and engineering equipment assigned to the Project Maintenance Unit.

Duties

Help
  • Performs repair, overhaul, and modification work on tracklaying and special floating plant engineering equipment powered by internal combustion gasoline or diesel engines.
  • Performs repair on engines, starters, clutches, differentials, carburetors, magnetos, transmissions, steering and braking systems, and related electrical, hydraulic, and fuel units.
  • Performs mechanical repairs on marine equipment and related construction equipment.
  • Services and adjusts gasoline or diesel engines, electric motors, generators, pumps, and other machinery and equipment aboard ship.
  • Operates auxiliary equipment, including pumps, generators, air compressors, and other machinery operated by electric motors or small auxiliary engines.
  • Overhauls starters, carburetors, clutches, transmissions, and steering and braking systems on construction equipment.

  • IAW ER 385-1-40, pre-employment and position change or termination physicals are required. Additionally, annual physicals are required to test vision and pulmonary function.
  • Must possess a valid State motor vehicle operator's license for the class of vehicle being operated based on site specific, job related requirements, and must maintain this license.
  • Temporary duty travel is required 50% or more of the time depending on mission duties and site location.
  • Incumbent may be required to quarter and subsist aboard the vessel when other lodging and food facilities are not readily or conveniently available, or when quartering is essential to the safety and/or security of the vessel.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Marine Machinery Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. which includes the ability to perform common Marine Machinery Mechanic tasks. Apply specific maintenance and repair procedures to install, maintain, and repair marine machinery and equipment on a floating plant. Able to interpret blueprints and detailed specifications in order to detect malfunctions, determine corrective measures, and make repairs using test equipment and measuring devices. Able to assist higher graded marine machinery mechanics on assignments involving machinery of greater complexity by disassembling and assembling the simpler components and assemblies, locating and repairing or replacing defective parts and components. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Conditions: Work requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hands, and feet and also legs and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment.
  • Working Conditions: Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noise, and fumes. Subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in the lungs, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from use of machine tools, and to strains from infrequent lifting or swinging of somewhat heavy items. Wears safety glasses, shoes, and other equipment as required. Standard hazard of drowning during floating plant operation is encountered. Employees are required to follow established safe working procedures. Appropriate personal protective equipment is provided to minimize or reduce hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory.
