  • May service as leader of a crew consisting of three or more employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Recreation Support Work:
  • Carries out a variety of project plans and activities in support of the unit recreation program.
  • Assists in the implementation of recreation operation and maintenance plans for developed and dispersed recreation sites.
  • Inspects recreation areas, and special uses permits for compliance with the permit and management plans, public health regulations, and safety plans.
  • Assists with performing compliance checks and inspections on existing permits under Special Use authorize.
  • Assists with the enforcement of Off-Road-Vehicle restrictions.
  • Assists with the maintenance of district recreation facilities such as toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, barriers, dumpsters and other miscellaneous structures.
  • Timber Support Work:
  • Performs as a Certified Timber Marker.
  • Prepares, develop, and executes timber cruises and sample surveys to develop resource information and estimate quality and quantity of timber for purpose of appraisal, sales administration, management planning, and logging plans.
  • Assembles and summarizes data, and prepares reports and maps regarding areas cruised.
  • Lays out sales in accordance with EA and other instructions, considering variables such as accessibility, steep slopes, stream protection, nesting tree protection, wildlife impacts, fuels management and regeneration requirements.
  • Independently marks trees using and adapting complex marking rules in areas complicated by variations in type, species composition, defect, site, age, class, etc.
  • Monitors and inspects timber sale operations having conventional contract requirements and conditions.
  • Prepares written reports of sale inspection and follow ups on deficiencies.
  • All positions filled through this announcement will be required to carry a firearm.
  • This position requires initial and continuing qualifications in the use of firearms as outlined in the Gun Control Act of 1968, amended by the Lautenberg Amendment of 1996.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-05: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level defined as one or more of the following: Assisting in providing basic information to visitors on recreation regulations, opportunities, or restrictions; performing small crew-based work, such as for recreation or trail maintenance projects; performing crew based forestry related support work such as selecting and marking individual trees for harvest using well defined marking guidelines, silviculture prescriptions, and specific instruction; OR assisting in the measurement of limiting distances, tree diameter, tree height as well as estimation of defect and quality, and related fundamental timber cruising procedures.
OR
A bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, recreation management programs, civil or forest engineering, wildland fire science, public administration and planning (including community and urban planning), landscape architecture; resources management, environmental sciences, or other biological sciences (no more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable);
OR
A combination of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

For the GS-06: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level defined as one or more of the following: Inspecting or maintaining developed recreation facilities; leading or coordinating a small crew of employees or volunteers to accomplish recreation maintenance or trail construction projects; patrolling use areas, making visitor contacts and providing visitor information; utilizing marking guidelines and silviculture prescriptions and marking trees for harvest; laying out boundaries of cutting areas as outlined in the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) documentation; OR independently cruising timber.
OR
One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level courses in a forestry or recreation management program of study;
OR
A combination of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Positions filled will be full-time; or full-time seasonal with either 13 pay periods of guaranteed pay status and 13 pay periods of nonpay time or 18 pay periods of guaranteed pay status and 8 pay periods of nonpay time.

The salary amount will be adjusted to include a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). A gradually reducing COLA will continue to be paid after December 31, 2012.
