Duties

Help

As a Museum Curator your duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Serves as senior member of ONHM's exhibit development team, which jointly develops and present new exhibits from initial concept through construction to exhibit launch.
  • Exercises continuing responsibility for the development and maintenance of the collection, including utilizing professional judgment in managing concerted efforts of collection expansion, location and selection of sources, and selective disposal of collection material.
  • Contributes substantially to ONHM's social-media posts and tracking standard metrics, working with other ONHM staff and ICO representatives to celebrate NIH anniversaries, observances, and commemor­a­tive occasions.
  • Provides guidance and mentoring to interns and volunteers; arranges and conducts tours of the collection; and develops lectures and educational materials related to the Museum, its collections, and its history for use in ONHM's education and outreach projects.
  • Oversees the development and maintenance of a balanced collection.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:
You qualify at the GS-13 level, if you meet one of the following qualification requirements:
You have successfully completed a Bachelor' s degree in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field (e.g. history, anthropology, archeology, art, or natural sciences). This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
OR
You have a combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
OR
You have four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in A above.

Additional Requirements:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Maintaining a museum collection, especially one focused on the history of scientific or medical research; contributing to development of exhibits, both online and physical, by selecting objects and drafting or editing exhibit text; managing the long-range care of a museum collection to include: collection expansion, documentation and transportation of objects, and selective disposal of collection material; and communicating the significance and value of a museum's collection through social media posts, professional networking, presentations, or publications; or articles in the popular press.

  • 2.Knowledge of professional standards and best practices that improve the long term quality, care, documentation, and protection of a museum collection.
  • 3. Ability to direct the long-term development and focus of a museum collection, declining, transferring, or disposing of items not within the museum’s scope.
  • 4.Skill in communicating information about the history of scientific research to individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.
