It travels by scheduled or chartered government aircraft (helicopter and fixed wing) to various locations within Alaska. Travel will also be by ATV and motorized watercraft on rivers and/or the ocean. Work occurs in remote areas of Alaska and one may be without other human contact or voice communications for periods of up to 6 weeks

Duties

  • Record survey data, to include corner evidence, survey measurement data, and original corner descriptions.
  • Use maps and GPS to determine locations; reduce GPS data resulting in valid coordinates; and use GPS real-time kinematic positioning techniques.
  • Serve as pacer of a leveling party, go ahead of the surveying party and determine in advance position rodman will occupy so that shots will be balanced and instruments can be kept level.
  • Assist in the monumentation and recording of corner positions of surveys.
  • Measure and record distances from corner moves and ties to accessories and select and mark bearing trees and bearing objectives.

Qualifications

To be eligible, an applicant must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age or older for an arduous or hazardous duty position.
  • Be a student who has been accepted for enrollment or is currently enrolled at least half-time in a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking program in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school.
  • Possess a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 or higher.

To be creditable, experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.

GS-03 - You must possess six (6) months of general work experience which demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of a Surveying Aid.

Education- Have completed one year of education above high school which included at least one course in surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of general experience and appropriate undergraduate education.

Physical Demands: Work requires physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment up to 30 lbs, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.

Work Environment: When doing fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests or animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

Lodging may be paid while residing in Anchorage.

This is a temporary, excepted service appointment under the BLM Pathways Internship Program that is expected not-to-exceed 1 year. This type of appointment is intended only for temporary projects, to perform labor-intensive tasks not requiring subject matter expertise, or to fill traditional summer jobs. The BLM will require the selected applicant to complete a Participant Agreement in which it shall document the anticipated start and end dates for this temporary appointment.

Applicants will complete the following training: defensive driving; aid to victims (i.e., First Aid, CPR, Wildland First Aid, etc.); safe use of firearms for bear safety; motorized watercraft (boat) operation and safety; all-terrain vehicle (ATV) operation and safety; aircraft safety; tree felling safety; and in chainsaw operation and safety.
