Summary

These positions are located within the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Economic Research Service (ERS). The selectees are not required to report to a government office, however, the option to work in one of the Agency offices may be available.

In these positions, you will be responsible for identifying, analyzing, and presenting technical and economic information and brief analytical reports on various economic issues.

Duties

  • Conduct specific segments of research projects according to precedented research methods or other technical approaches.
  • Manipulate statistical data and present it graphically, in databases, and report formats that can be accessed using the Agency's internet outlets.
  • Use statistical and database software (Excel, Access, Power Point) to develop and maintain databases and to serve as a team member and work alone in conducting empirical analyses and the ability to learn new computer skills as needed.
  • Participate with other economists and project leaders in defining research objectives.
  • Use analytical techniques to assist more senior economists and program specialists in their research and analytical work and to frequently complete individual projects of broad scope and increasing technical difficulty.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement. Program Eligibility Requirements Applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment from a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis. Applicants must be seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) and be in good academic standing (GPA of 2.0 or equivalent) throughout the duration of their program. Please see "Required Documents". The duties of the position must be related to either the student's academic or career goals.

PATHWAYS ELIGIBILITY:
All applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a student on at least a half-time schedule at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program.

All applicants must have academic or career goals that are related to the duties and responsibilities of the position, which may be related to economics, data, or research.

GS-07
Education: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate-level education; or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree. Related degrees may include Economics or other subjects related to the study of economic and data analytical methods.
OR
Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.): Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. S.A.A. is based on (1) Class Standing - applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class, based on completed courses; or (2) Grade-Point Average - applicants must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (3) Election to membership in a National Honor Society - membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision.

GS-09:
Education: Completion of 2 academic years of graduate-level education, or a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree. Related degrees may include Economics or other subjects related to the study of economic and data analytical methods.

Applicants will be assessed/evaluated through the application of the agency-developed qualification standard for internship positions, which is based solely on level of education.

Education

You must submit a copy of your college transcripts. An unofficial copy is sufficient with the application if it includes your name and the necessary course information; however, if you are selected, you will be required to submit official transcripts prior to entering on duty. Education must have been successfully obtained from an accredited school, college or university. If any education was completed at a foreign institute, you must submit with your application evidence that the institute was appropriately accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as equivalent to U.S. education standards. All transcripts must be in English or include an English translation.

Additional information

  • ERS is seeking students to participate in the 2023 Summer Pathways Internship Program. This temporary appointment is expected to begin May 2024 & the appointment initially will not exceed 89 calendar days. Internships are open to individuals who have been accepted for enrollment or who are enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) from a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis. Students seeking degrees in economics, data, or research are highly desired.
  • This is a temporary, excepted service position not to exceed 1 year or less and may be extended in increments not to exceed 1 or less for up to 8 years in total when the student intern remains eligible for the program.
  • Student Interns must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of the appointment. Incumbents will be required to provide proof of continued enrollment and good standing (GPA of 2.0 or equivalent)each semester or grading period throughout the internship program. Failure to do so will result in termination of the appointment.
  • Upon completion of all program requirements, Pathways Interns may be converted to a term, career-conditional, or career appointment within 120 days following successful completion of all their education; however, conversion is not guaranteed. The full performance level (FPL) of the position to which converted may be up to the GS-15 level.
  • This internship is temporary with a not-to-exceed date of 1 year or less; therefore, it does not have promotion potential.
  • Within-grade increases will not be given during the internship.
  • Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of Agriculture. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.
