Duties

Help

As a Facilities Maintenance Worker, you will:

  • Perform painting of building structures, e.g. doors, window sashes, walls, etc.
  • Build shelves and make repairs to building structures. Do remodeling and maintaining of existing facilities.
  • Perform plumbing repairs, modification to facilities, and maintain water systems (e.g., potable, well, purification, etc.)
  • Repair concrete surfaces by patching, dry-packing, curing and finishing as required for acceptable appearances. Perform work incidental to the installation of concrete.
  • Service and make repairs or replacement to heating and air conditioning equipment, which includes changing filters, greasing and lubricating.
  • Grease and lubricate freight elevators, hoists, and bridge cranes.
  • Perform maintenance and repair of alarm systems.
  • Perform maintenance of fuel dispensing facilities, which includes adjustment to, testing, and the changing of hoses and filters.
  • Maintain and replace windows and doors, including adjustment of hinges, locking mechanisms, and lubrication of doors and hardware.
  • Repair, install and adjust various types of fencing; including fence fabric, security wires, top rails, and truss supports.
  • Perform maintenance and repair of various roofing systems, including sheet metal and down spouts.
  • Perform maintenance of grounds, including application of pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Perform maintenance of roads, walks, and parking areas including snow removal, sweeping, leveling, and grading.
  • Inspect and perform minor maintenance and repairs (non-electrical in nature) of oil containment systems (OCS), security gates, automatic door mechanisms, etc.
  • Perform maintenance of floors, including waxing, stripping, and replacing of flooring.
  • Perform routine maintenance on tools and equipment used common to job functions.
  • Lay out own tools and materials and keeps own work area clean.
  • Maintain stock and stock records of maintenance supplies, equipment and tools necessary for the efficient maintenance of facilities.
  • Maintain records and maintenance schedules in accordance with manufacturer's recommendation or BPA directives. Reports and records deficiencies found.
  • Arrange for vendors or contractors. Make inspection of vendor deliveries or contractor work.
  • Is responsible for preparation and submission of administrative documentation associated with duties.
  • Perform cyclical facilities condition assessments and annual inspections; collects data on building components, structures, and systems (assets); identifies current conditions of facility systems; verifies information; and provides information to assist in developing requirements and priorities in support of BPA Facilities Asset Management (FAM) program.
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

  • Position is subject to initial pre-employment Drug Testing and random drug testing thereafter.
  • Position requires a pre-employment medical exam, at BPA expense, prior to appointment due to the physical requirements of the position.
  • After employment, this position may be subject to periodic physical examinations, as prescribed by competent medical authority and at BPA expense, if exposed to health hazards.

  • Apprentices in the last year of the program are encouraged to submit an application to indicate duty locations for which they want to be considered for permanent placement.
  • Preliminary background check must be completed before a new employee can begin work. Current Federal employees or other individuals with an existing completed background investigation may not be required to undergo another background check.
  • Become familiar with/follow the safety practices of the BPA Accident Prevention Manual and OSHA regulations applicable to this position.
  • If exposed to health hazards, have periodic physical examinations as prescribed by competent medical authority at BPA expense. (Employees will work in close proximity to substances, such as asbestos, acids, PCB's, pesticides, mercury, lead, etc., which may have effects on health unless prescribed handling procedures are followed.)
  • Subject to call for emergency work at any time.
  • Possess a valid state driver's license. Additional endorsements on valid drivers license may be required to operate assigned vehicles in compliance with state regulations. Traffic citations indicating poor driving habits may disqualify applicants.
  • Obtain non-electrical worker permit within 30 days after appointment.
  • Possess within 1 year after appointment, and maintain continuously thereafter, a First Aid Card.
  • Operate motorized equipment, e.g. 1-ton pickup, flatbed or van-type truck, forklift, or bobcat. Obtaining any necessary Certification is the responsibility of the employee.
  • As part of the job requirements, and, at the discretion of the Deputy Regional Manager or Facilities Manager, the Facility Maintenance Worker may be required to apply restricted use pesticides and may be required to obtain a pesticide applicator's license. The Administration shall provide the necessary training for such a license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors under all prevailing weather conditions during the day or night.
  • Hazards include working around high voltage equipment, machinery with moving parts, and exposure to dust, grease, oil, metal or wood shavings, and other miscellaneous debris.
  • Work may be required at various heights, such as from scaffolding, motorized buckets, and ladders.
  • The work environment will occasionally include high noise levels or exposure to hazardous substances (i.e., asbestos, acids, PCBs, pesticides, mercury, etc.) that could, if precautions are not followed, pose a health risk.
  • Proper respiratory and safety equipment shall be worn when hazardous substances are being handled.
  • The possibility of explosion or fire is ever-present.
  • The Facility Maintenance Worker normally works a standard workday and a standard workweek, but Facility priorities may require extended periods of overtime, including working weekends, holidays, and overnight travel away from headquarters.

Semi-Annual Rating/Ranking:

Semi-annual rating/ranking will be conducted in January and July for the following craft positions:

  • Electrician Foreman I, II, and III (Maintenance and Construction)
  • Lineman Foreman I and III
  • Chief Substation Operator III

NOTE: Applications for the above positions must be received by no later than 11:59 p.m. (EST) December 31, 2024 to be included in the January 2025 semi-annual rating/ranking process. Bid applications received between January 1, 2024 and June 30, 2024 will be rated/ranked by subject matter expert (SME) panel during the July 2024 semi-annual rating/ranking period.

Bid Applications submitted for positions not included in the semi-annual rating/ranking schedule will be rated/ ranked by SME panel only after a manager's request to fill the position is received in BPA's HR Service Center, Recruitment and Placement workgroup, HA-1.

Applications that are rated/ranked must receive a rating of "best qualified" (transmuted score of 80, or higher) to be referred for hiring consideration. Those who received a "best qualified" rating will retain this ranking for up to five (5) years from the date of rating. Applicants must submit a new annual bid list application each year during the 5-year rating period to receive consideration for each year.
