Duties

Help

As a Data Scientist, you will:

  • Identify the data and technical methods needed to overcome major data science, data engineering, or data analysis-related challenges. Solve data problems through a combination of subject matter research as well as knowledge of data engineering, data analysis, statistics, and programming.
  • Build data-driven applications or analysis using open-source languages such as Python, R, SQL, and Spark.
  • Leverage machine learning model expertise to identify and address consumer harm.
  • Design and develop data solutions in the AWS cloud making use of technologies and platforms such as Databricks, Apache Airflow, and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch.
  • Research and implement modern data governance and data management best practices to ensure data is secure and easily available for data-driven decision-making.

Selectees living in the Washington, D.C. locality pay area will have their duty station listed as CFPB Headquarters. Selectees living outside the Washington, D.C. locality pay area will have their duty station listed as their home address. The locality pay you receive will be determined by your duty station: CFPB Headquarters (Washington, D.C.), or home address if located outside the D.C. locality pay area.

Remote work is approved for the contiguous united states and does not include Alaska, Hawaii or US territories and possessions.

Key Requirements:

  • Must be U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
  • A one year probationary period may be required.
  • Public Trust - Background Investigation will be required.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
  • Have your salary sent to a financial institution of your choice by Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the announcement's closing date.

To be qualified for this position, you must meet the basic education or work education/experience combination requirements for Data Scientist positions in the federal government. These requirements are:

- Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position.

OR

- Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.

AND

Specialized Experience: For the CN-53, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the CN-52 grade level in the Federal service. (For qualification purposes, the CN-52 is broadly equivalent to the GS-12). Specialized Experience for this position includes:
  • Experience applying design or implementation of data science, data engineering, or data management methods; AND
  • Experience developing data-driven solutions or analysis using open-source languages (e.g., Python, R, SQL, or Spark); AND
  • Experience working in a collaborative environment with stakeholders, team members, or end-users on new initiatives by gathering requirements and recommending data or analytical methodologies; AND
  • Experience with data management or data governance (e.g., modeling, integrating, transforming, managing operations, performance tuning, data quality, or privacy access controls).
The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/day/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week on your résumé.

Education

Education Requirements: The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If you are qualifying based on foreign education, you must submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency. Refer to the OPM instructions.
