Duties

Help

As a LIBRARY TECHNICIAN (OFFICE AUTOMATION), you will:

  • Perform copy cataloging and related tasks for monographs, government documents, microfiche, and other materials involving complex procedures and decision making using a variety of cataloging tools including the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) Record Manager system, the Government Publications Office (GPO) Catalog of Government Publications (CGP), and the Library of Congress catalog in accordance with Resources Description and Access (RDA), and local procedures.
  • Perform physical processing of books and other tangible resources of library materials in order to make them available to library patrons including applying barcodes, spine labels and protectors, a variety of custom labels for specialty resources and collections, security strips, acid-free call number slips, dust jacket covers, and stamping, as needed. 
  • Apply basic preservation techniques for older, fragile materials such as removing labels, boxing, preparing Mylar and box enclosures, and preparing acid-free barcode and call number strips for identification and retrieval.  
  • Assist with ongoing inventory, physical evaluation, maintenance, and weeding of the library collection.
  • Prepare textbook and other standard library book binding units using the ABLE library binding software, and the Library Services Platform, in accordance with local procedures.

The ideal candidate for this position will have significant experience copy cataloging using the Library of Congress and SuDoc classification systems and the OCLC Record Manager or Connexion bibliographic utility, Resource, Description, and Access (RDA), the WorldShare Management (WMS) Library Services Platform (LSP), and other cataloging tools. Additionally, the candidate will have experience and skill in physical processing and preservation of books and other tangible resources including applying security targets, removing and apply labels, applying dust jacket covers, basic book repair and preservation techniques.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the specialized experience requirements.

To qualify for the GS-06, you must have at least one year of equal or equivalent experience equal to the GS-05, which includes:

The candidate will be experienced with library technical services in the following areas:

  • Experience copy cataloging books, using the OCLC Record Manager or Connexion systems.
  • Experience using a library services platform or integrated library system, preferably, the OCLC WorldShare Management Services, WMS platform. 
  • Experienced with the processing of books, basic book repair, and book preservation.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

Technical Knowledge: Proficient with library copy cataloging of monographs, government documents, and microfiche, and with physical processing of library materials.

Program Knowledge: Provides recommendations, solutions, or reports for the organization of library information material to meet clientele information needs in the most effective and efficient manner.

Communication: The ability to communicate effectively with library clientele verbally and in writing.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
