Duties

Help
  • Monitor permit compliance and evaluate visitor experience, user capacity, and resource protection issues that arise as a result of recreational use.
  • Assist in the Resource Management Plan and Special Recreation Management Plan processes as well as Visual Resource Management and Wild and Scenic River designations.
  • Provide recommendations on recreation program requirements and resources including the development and use of facilities such as campgrounds, trails, and interpretive wayside installations.
  • Oversee recreation management, permitting, and planning at the field office. Permit activities include guided hunting, transporting, film and photography, and tour operations.
  • Research and analyze a wide variety of recreation related data and information. Conduct monitoring and/or inventory studies and surveys and identify trends and patterns. Enter, manipulate, update, and maintain data in an automated system.

Qualifications

GS-9 - You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level. Specialized experience is further defined as: Analysis and evaluation of outdoor recreation interests, habits, and needs of diversified groups, and the means for meeting those needs; evaluation of land or water areas for their recreation and related potential use; park guide or tour leader; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; or natural resource research work.

Education: Possess a Master's or equivalent degree or two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree in a field related to the position being filled, or LL.B or J.D., if related. The degree should have a major study in outdoor recreation planning or a related field such as sociology, forestry, landscape architecture, economics, biological science, park administration, earth science, natural resource management and conservation, civil engineering, urban planning, or recreation that included one or more courses in outdoor recreation.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

GS-11 - You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level. Specialized experience is further defined as: Analysis and evaluation of outdoor recreation interests, habits, and needs of diversified groups, and the means for meeting those needs; evaluation of land or water areas for their recreation and related potential use, such as wildlife reserve; preparation or review of plans and programs for natural resource utilization and recreation area development; solution of administrative, intergovernmental, socioeconomic, and other problems involved in providing adequate recreation opportunities while preserving, restoring, and enhancing the quality of the outdoor environment.

Education: Possess a PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree or three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M in an accredited college or university that is related to the position. The degree should have a major study in outdoor recreation planning or a related field such as sociology, forestry, landscape architecture, economics, biological science, park administration, earth science, natural resource management and conservation, civil engineering, urban planning, or recreation that included one or more courses in outdoor recreation.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: This position requires walking over rough or mountainous terrain, recurring bending, crouching or stooping with possible exposure to inclement weather.

Work Environment: Field work will require camping and/or living in remote and primitive conditions to include sleeping in a tent and preparing your own food while doing field work.
