  • Positions will perform work in one or more of the following programs. Duties described are at the minimum full performance grade level.
  • Timber Program Support:
  • Independently applies silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber.
  • Performs preparatory work for timber cruises, such as traversing and mapping, estimating volumes and quality of timber, measuring and identifying defects of timber, summarizing and reporting data collected, and preparing maps.
  • Marks timber using well-defined marking rules, established marking guides, and specific instructions.
  • Recreation/Wilderness/Trails Program Support:
  • Assists in the implementation of recreation operation and maintenance plans for developed and dispersed recreation sites.
  • Inspects recreation areas, and special use permits for compliance with the permit and management plans, public health regulations, and safety plans.
  • Assists with performing compliance checks and inspections on existing permits under Special-Use authorization.
  • Assists with the maintenance of district recreation facilities such as toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, barriers, dumpsters, and other miscellaneous structures.
  • Wildland Fire Management Support:
  • Performs wildland fire suppression/management/control, as a firefighter on an engine, hotshot, helitack or hand crew.
  • Other wildland fire related duties might involve fire prevention, patrol, detection, or prescribed burning.
  • The incumbent will also be involved with the maintenance and repair of firefighting tools equipment and facilities, and will receive firefighting training.
  • May be assigned for varying periods of time into one or more types of positions within the fire management organization where individual's specialized skills are needed.
  • Fire Dispatch Program Support:
  • Serves as a dispatcher, receiving, filling, and tracking resource requests for fire and other emergency incidents.
  • Collects, processes, collates and submits incident information to support fire operations (e.g., fire reports, smoke permits, spot weather forecasts, prescribed fire burn requests).
  • Inputs data into a number of fire-related computer applications (e.g., incident qualification records, fire reporting systems, and automated dispatch systems) and makes the initial assessment of outputs.
  • Positions may perform other duties as assigned.

Eligibility Requirements: You must have lived and or worked in or near the geographic boundaries of the Chugach National Forest or Tongass National Forest and have special knowledge or expertise concerning the natural and cultural resources in Southcentral or Southeast Alaska area to participate in natural resources activities.

This is a bargaining unit position and is represented by NFFE.

Government housing may be available.

Federal affiliated daycare facilities are not available.


Some positions may be eligible to telework up to four days per week, based upon the duties of the position. Some positions may also be eligible for flexible work arrangements as determined by agency policy and any applicable collective bargaining agreements.

If you are selected for a position with further promotion potential, you will be placed under a career development plan, and may be non-competitively promoted if you successfully complete the requirements and if recommended by management. However, promotion is not guaranteed.

ANILCA appointments require a 2 year probationary period. Upon completion of 2 years the incumbent will be non-competitively converted to a career or career-conditional appointment if all of the following are met: successful completion of 2 year probationary period, Office of Personnel Management (OPM) qualification requirements are met for the position the incumbent is converting into, satisfactorily meeting performance requirements, and completion of all prescribed training. If all requirements are not met upon completion of two years in this position, employment will be terminated.
