This position is located under the Office of Science and Technology, Forensic Science Laboratory and the Fire Research Laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland.

Serves as a Chemist providing highly technical and scientific services that directly facilitate the accomplishment and support the Bureau's enforcement programs. Typical work assignments include:

  • Performs routine chemical and physical analyses with limited technical guidance.
  • Interprets and evaluates the results of analyses to determine the scientific significance and to ensure that all relevant questions are answered.
  • Performs examinations, which usually require both wet chemistry and instrumental procedures such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, etc.
  • Provides expert witness testimony on the basis of laboratory examinations.
  • Prepares laboratory reports.

MOBILITY PLAN: New employees hired pursuant to this vacancy announcement must sign a mobility agreement. To accomplish these objectives, the mobility plan will facilitate the movement of employees through special short-term assignments or permanent reassignments throughout the Bureau. This is a non-bargaining unit position.

Key Requirements:

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

A. Degree
: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

B.
A combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

To qualify for the GS-11, candidates must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-09.

Specialized experience is demonstrated experience, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Experience must be in the normal line of progression or must be related to the work of the position advertised and must be reflected in resume. Examples of specialized experience include:

  • Analyzing a wide range of evidence from criminal investigations for ignitable liquids, explosives, or trace (fibers, hairs, paint, etc.); and
  • Documenting results of examinations, to make determinations about the evidence; and
  • Using judgment in evaluating evidence received to determine the most effective method to use for the processing of different types of evidence; and
  • Preparing laboratory reports on the activities conducted; and
  • Providing court testimony regarding their work.

Education

All academic degrees and course work must be completed at a college or university that has obtained accreditation or pre-accreditation status from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools that meet this criteria see www.ed.gov.
