Duties

Help
  • Conducts economic analyses at varying geographic scales to identify socioeconomic values and evaluate the market and non-market effects of BLM management activities using quantitative and qualitative methods.
  • Serves as the data administrator for social and economic-related databases and uses knowledge of SQL relational databases and the R programming language to maintain scripts that automate data processing and streamline large-scale analyses.
  • Designs and conducts economic analyses for evaluation and reporting requirements associated with major Federal initiatives.
  • Serves as an authoritative source for information on economic principles and best practices for conducting socioeconomic analyses in support of land use planning.
  • Fulfill the requirements of land use authorization documents required under the Federal Land Policy Management Act of 1976 (FLMPA), the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), and related legislation.
  • Provides analyst-level support for specialized projects from headquarters (HQ). Maintains effective working relationships with academic institutions, nongovernmental organizations, advisory boards, and interest/user groups.
  • Coordinates with HQ and NOC staff to develop and manage national or regional-level projects.
  • Assists in the preparation and delivery of training and educational services designed to teach basic to intermediate skills in economics and/or clarify social science concepts.
  • This work is usually performed in collaboration with the BLM National Training Center (NTC) and may require coordination with other federal agencies involved in land management activities.

Qualifications

In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Must have experience collecting, interpreting, analyzing, and presenting data related to the allocation, utilization, or valuation of natural resources while working under supervision; AND experience scripting using the R programming language to clean, analyze, and/ or visualize data and query relational databases; AND experience working on interdisciplinary teams.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education


Education: Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.

Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
