Duties

Help

  • Prepares a variety of meals of limited complexity following USDA-approved recipes and in accordance with the needs of the various day programs offered by the Child Development Center.
  • On a day-to-day basis, prepares breakfast items, such as oatmeal, toast, boxed cereals, pancakes, scrambled eggs and fresh fruit. Prepares a lunch meal of items such as homemade soups or stews, casseroles, chili, burritos, pizza, mashed potatoes, vegetables, fresh or canned fruits, applesauce, banana bread, cookies and occasionally desserts such as apple cobbler.
  • Food is prepared for children of various ages.
  • Prepared food will be of varying consistencies/textures depending on the age of children being served.
  • Substitutions are also made to ensure special dietary needs, such as allergies, are met on a daily basis.
  • Measures and/or weighs portions and ingredients as required by recipes.
  • Adjusts recipes for the number of servings required in large quantity cooking.
  • Maintains the proper temperature for all foods during holding, transport, reheating and serving to assure quality control and food safety.
  • Places cooked foods in serving dishes, trays, and carrying carts.
  • May be required to roll carts to children's eating areas.
  • Washes, cleans and disinfects kitchen equipment.
  • The kitchen has the following standard equipment: oven/grill. refrigerator(s), food processor, microwave, large mixer and slicer.
  • Dates and stores food items and monitors food spoilage on a daily basis to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Accurately documents the productivity records daily. As required, assists the Assistant Director in ordering supplies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Qualifying Experience:

  • Must have ability to follow standardized recipes and cooking techniques, follow instructions, work safely, and do simple arithmetic. Knowledge of operating and cleaning food service equipment, characteristics of various foods, and the ability to season food and decide when foods are done are required.
  • Knowledge of principles of food spoilage, food borne illness, and food safety are also required.
  • Must be able to obtain Food Handler's, First Aid, and CPR certificates.
  • Satisfactory completion of a pre-employment physical is required.
  • This position is subject to furlough from approximately June through August.
  • Completion of the following security checks are required: NACI, IRC, and SCHRC.
  • Immunizations required.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position do not allow for education substitution.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
