Duties

Help

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-13. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

  • Create designs in 3-D graphics formats using electronic sculpting software; or design and develop 3-D models of varied materials that can be scanned with non-contact scanning /digitization systems and revised or modified digitally.
  • Design, implement and execute clay, wax or plaster models to required specification scales in low relief of accepted designs.
  • Inspect, engrave and refine master tooling (steel dies and hubs) that is produced by CNC (Computer Numerical Control) tools or conventional machining methods.
  • Represent the United States Mint at selected public functions and ceremonies.
  • Analyze, evaluate, coordinate and participate in test/trial strike reviews and events; and recommend appropriate technical modifications and changes to optimize and promote efficient and effective coin, medal and other devices production processes and efforts.
  • Develop and recommend innovative methods and procedures to enhance and improve finishes for coins, medals and other devices.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements within 14 days of the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience:
For the GS-13, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service.
Specialized experience for this position includes:
Experience creating designs and models for use in manufacturing hubs and/or dies; designing, sculpting, and creating finished renderings for coinage and medals; using digital design, sculpting software and other bas relief sculpting tools; sculpting with plastilene, clay, wax or other material & creating plaster models. Experience presenting and communicating orally or in writing to varied audiences.
Examples of such experience could include:
- Creating designs for coinage, medals and other devices. AND
- Creating designs in 3-D graphics formats using electronic sculpting software. AND- Representing an organization at selected public functions and ceremonies. AND
- Interacting with oversight committees and/or boards advocating for or taking a certain position on sculpture designs and techniques. AND
- Participating in and becoming a finalist for design competitions.

For the GS-11, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service.
Specialized experience for this position includes:
Experience following prescribed designs and models following guidelines and/or templates for use in manufacturing hubs and/or dies; designing, sculpting, and creating finished renderings for coinage and medals; using digital design, sculpting software and other bas relief sculpting tools; sculpting with plastilene, clay, wax or other material & creating plaster models. Experience presenting and communicating orally or in writing to varied audiences.
Examples of such experience could include:
- Creating designs for coinage, medals and other devices. AND
- Creating designs in 3-D graphics formats using electronic sculpting software. AND
- Participating in peer review feedback for designs.
OR
You may substitute education for experience: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.M., if related
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.

For the GS-09, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service.
Specialized experience for this position includes:
Experience following basic designs and models guidelines and/or templates. Using digital design, sculpting software and other bas relief sculpture techniques. Experience communicating orally or in writing to varied audiences.
Examples of such experience could include:
- Creating designs for coinage, medals and other devices. AND
- Creating designs in 3-D graphics formats using electronic sculpting software.OR
You may substitute education for experience: Master's or equivalent graduate degree; or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.B. or J.D., if related
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.


In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-13 you must have been at the GS-12level for 52 weeks.
For the GS-11 you must have been at the GS-09level for 52 weeks.
For the GS-09 you must have been at the GS-07level for 52 weeks.

Education

Education Requirements: The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Rating: Your application will be evaluated in the following area: Technical.

***If you meet the specialized experience requirements for Phase 1, you will then be asked to submit a portfolio to include 10-20 works showing experience in sculpting production ready low relief for coins and medals including original designs for such products. A selection of portrait drawings is required, too. All in .pdf form. Additional materials may be asked upon review.

The portfolio will be assessed by a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to determine your level of proficiency. Your application will be rated and ranked among others, based on your responses to the online questions, regarding your experience, education, training, performance appraisals and awards relevant to the duties of this position. Your rating may be lowered if your responses to the online questions are not supported by the education and/or experience described in your application.

Referral: ***Scoring from both phases of the assessment will be used to determine who will be referred. Phase 1 will consist of 75% of the overall score and Phase 2 will consist of 25% of the overall score. If you are among the top qualified candidates, your application may be referred to a selecting official for consideration. You may be required to participate in a selection interview.
