Duties

Help

As an IT Specialist, you will install, program, monitor, and maintain hardware and software, including interactive display kiosks, and audio visual equipment, and to assist with the museum desktop computer support.

In this position, you will:

  • Maintain the proper working order of kiosk interactives, exhibition displays, networking equipment, and other exhibition elements or fine-art objects with integrated IT or electronic components. S/he resolves problems related to both equipment and associated software.
  • Help monitor the status of interactive exhibition elements, including audio visual displays and electronic works of art. These tasks are performed using IT-based show control network monitoring (Medialon system), remote access monitoring, and by performing visual inspections.
  • Conduct troubleshooting for hardware and software problems, and install and configure hardware associated with workstations, including, peripherals, multimedia devices, and printers, drivers, desktop computer operating systems, and network application clients, and diagnose, replace or repair, configure, or upgrade existing hardware associated with the desktop environment, which may include network connectivity, video cards, sound cards, motherboards, cables, hard drives, and DVD drives.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent may do considerable walking and physical work during the course of their duties, engages in lifting and/or carrying large and sometimes heavy objects such as A/V kiosks and video monitors, climbs ladders, operates personnel lifts, and works in some confined spaces. Manual dexterity is required for installation and troubleshooting of equipment.

Conditions of Employment: When working around exhibition construction areas, the incumbent is subject to the same hazards as in a light construction zone.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as activities such as installing and troubleshooting networked IT equipment, including hardware, software, and peripherals; monitoring and analyzing interactive IT and A/V systems such as display kiosks or other technology or media-based systems; supporting an IT Help Desk and providing desktop user assistance; writing code or scripts to automate processes (such as programming applications for lighting, sound, or video display).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: master's degree or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree.

In addition to meeting the Specialized Experience for all positions individuals must have related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below:

Listens effectively; clarifies information, as needed.  Speaks and writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner that is appropriate to the audience.  Facilitates an open exchange of ideas to ensure all group input is considered.  Handles technical, sensitive, or controversial topics with agility involving executives/managers as appropriate.
  4. Problem Solving: Identifies and analyzes problems, weighs relevance and accuracy of information, generates and evaluates alternative solutions, and makes sound recommendations.

The employing agency is responsible for identifying the specific level of proficiency required for each competency at each grade level based on the requirements of the position being filled.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

  • Ability to specify and install interactive display kiosks, audio visual equipment, and other technology or media-based systems.
  • Knowledge of audiovisual display and show control applications, such as Medialon, in order to manage display through custom C++ scripts, device drivers, and OS batch files.
  • Ability to monitor, analyze, and troubleshoot system malfunctions and restore equipment to proper working order.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.

Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.

Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied.
