Duties

Help

As a Physical Scientist, you will perform the following duties:

  • Provide scientific guidance to the SW Next L 1 series Program Manager during the formulation of performance requirements and architectural stages of the mission.
  • Provide technology support in the design, construction, and integration of satellite instrumentation to be used in the measurement of the space environment.
  • Work with the NOAA, NESDIS and Space Weather user community to define the users' needs, operational requirements, and science data product requirements for the SW Next L1 mission through the NOAA Observing System Council.
  • Participate in technology and engineering support for international cooperation with U.S. operational remote sensing satellite systems, including compatibility of space systems and ground data processing functions.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to the Sr. Scientist, Program Manager and deputies, science management and the data users.

This position will be filled under the DOC Alternative Personnel Systems (CAPS). This system replace the Federal GS pay plan and structure. Under CAPS, positions are classified by career, pay plan, and pay band.

The ZP-5 is equivalent to the GS-15.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: This position has a positive Education Requirement in addition to at least one year of Specialized Experience OR substitution of education for experience OR combination (if applicable) in order to be found minimally qualified. Transcripts must be submitted with your application package. You MUST meet the following requirements:

To Qualify for the 1301 Series
Degree:
physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

OR

Combination of education and experience: education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

-AND-

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify at the ZP-5 or GS-15:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Applicants must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZA-4 or GS-14 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:

  • Conducting scientific research on heliospheric environment or space weather and related topics;
  • Performing processing, calibration, and analysis of heliospheric satellite instrument data; and
  • Serving as subject matter expert leading a scientific research project or applied space environment product through design, implementation, reporting and completion of the project.

Education

  • Transcripts: If this position requires specific educational course work to qualify, or you are qualifying based in whole or part on education, you are required to provide all unofficial transcripts (undergraduate, graduate, etc.) by the closing date of this announcement or you will be disqualified from further consideration.
