Summary

The ideal candidate will have a state license and preferably possess specialty certifications for organizations such as the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS) International, or Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association (NDTA). In this role, you would serve as an Associate Investigator, or Principle Investigator (PI) for occupational therapy originated protocols, in addition to clinical care duties for biomedical research patients.

Duties

Help
  • Serving as a mentor to occupational therapists to identify needs for occupational therapy research.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of new and established techniques and modifies as necessary to meet requirements of constantly changing, complex biomedical and psycho-social research protocols.
  • Evaluating the impact of implementation of research findings into the occupational therapy practice and reports results of research internally and to the community at large.
  • Planning for patient care utilizing multi-disciplinary and intra-disciplinary approaches and integrating data from a variety of sources.
  • Implementing the occupational therapy care plan and collaborates with other health care professionals.
  • Acting as consultant within the organization to solve complex and/or ambiguous problems.
  • Performing advanced techniques which requires in-depth knowledge to apply new scientific/technological procedures in the treatment of difficult or complex individual problems.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Occupational Therapist, GS-0631 you must:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Possess a graduate or higher level degree that included: An occupational therapy curriculum approved by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) or a professional accrediting organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained AND completion of the clinical requirements prescribed by the school;
OR

B. A bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy and a substantial record of experience and achievement that demonstrates competence in the occupational therapy field. Individuals who qualify based on this option will be subject to a comprehensive evaluation of both their education and experience prior to final appointment.

CERTIFICATION: Applicants must have passed the national examination administered by theNational Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition, in order to qualify for an Occupational Therapist at the GS-12 level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks:assessing the actual and probable physical and psychosocial condition of the patient according to the Model of Human Occupation in a research setting; serving as an Associate Investigator (AI), or as a Principal Investigator (PI) for occupational therapy originated protocols in a research/clinical research setting; evaluating and treating patients in a research/clinical research setting; experience in using occupational therapy interventions consisting of but not limited to; edema management, orthotic design and fabrication and upper extremity rehabilitation with hand specialty.

  • This position is designated as an "emergency essential" position and the selected candidate will be considered an "emergency essential" employee and will be required to be available, ready, willing, and able to report for duty under all circumstances (e.g., inclement weather, government closings and holidays, lapses in appropriations, non-emergency and emergency situations) for operation 24 hours a day and 365 days per year coverage.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required upon selection/placement.

  • The work requires moderately heavy physical exertion on a regular and recurring basis such as assisting a paralyzed person in self-care transfer activities {wheelchair to bed, toilet, tub, automobile) or providing substantial support to individuals in ambulation therapy or in the ICU.
  • The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated with occupational exposure to moderate risks or discomforts in clinical environments (such as patient units) where therapists are exposed to patients with rare diseases, drug resistant organisms, or experimental pharmaceutical agents.
